I did this once as I wanted to add my bought stats to the player in the arena. From what I remember you just create your player and save it, then in the 'team management' bit in the main menu go to 'club transfers'. Change country until you find 'free agents'. Transfer the player to the team of your choice.
Now go back to team management and choose 'arena player' down the bottom of the list.

Sorry if this is a little vague. Not played it in a while, best I can remember.
