360 firmware toolbox wont recognize drive

I have a Hitachi drive that is in mode B and my PC can recognize it because when I insert an original game/movie it plays through the 360 Hitachi drive. When I go to direct drive dump using 360 firmware toolbox it says it "can not read from drive"
my Hitachi drive is 0079FL
any advice would be helpful

This is freaky, i was just about to paste a thread with the same exact problem. I've been trying to dump a hitachi 79fl for days now. I've tried safe mode and everything. The drive is recognized in device manager and is visible in with a drive letter. i can eject the disk and everything but no matter what i try, i keep getting "cannot read from drive". I tried Firmware toolbox 4.0 and 4.5. I have the maximus 79 passkey and i also put the drive in mode b using slax 2.1. I'm using an onboard sata connection, not a pci card. I tried the via6421A card put it the firmware just keep freezing. Any help, anyone. I feel like a zombie sitting at my computer for days, passing out for a couple hours and waking up only to keep trying. Pleeaaassse anyone help!!!

Is there any other way to flash the drive without using 360 firmware toobox? or a program that is simular to that one that does the same thing?

Thats the only way i know of. I'm going to check and see if it can be done in dos because i've posted questions on here about benq and hitachi 79 drives and i've got no response from anyone. It's like no one is very familiar with these drives.

ya apparemtly these are newer hitachi drives. yes please let me know if the dos way of flashing it works. thanks

There's a large chip on the 79 passkey, i'm not sure what its called but one of it's legs was loose. I tried to resolder it but was not able to so to really check if this passkey worked, i broked off the leg(5 days of trying to dump the firmware often will bring fustration enough to do this). Anyways the drive still boots up fine, shows up in windows goes into mode b using slax cd as usual but still gives the "cannot read from drive" response.I guess that connection was not important. I had a strong feeling all along that this passkey was faulty. Any ways i ordered a new chip and we will see how things will go from there. I'll keep you updated.

Was a passkey chip soldered on? That's the only way a Hitachi 0079fl can be flashed. You cannot flash it without soldering.

Yeah a chip was soldered on but one of the legs on one of the little components on the chip was loose. The first time i had soldered the chip on i saw a blue light when i powered up the drive but after that, and after a few installing and removing the chip, i never saw the light again.

Is it possible to just buy another sata dvd drive and replace the original 360 one? Or possible buy another hitachi drive and replace my 0079 one?

You can't replace the drive without first getting the key from the original drive that came with that xbox360 and spoofing the drive key, then flashing it to another drive. The drive is married to that xbox360 board so if you just put another xbox360 dvd drive in it, the board won't recognize the drive. Trust me, if it was that easy i would have just done that, i have a spare samsung and a benq drive to go with my hitachi79 and as soon as i get my hitachi key, i'm replacing the hitachi 79fl with the benq.
