I make a backup of the Orange Box, play it for an hour or so works fine. I connect to xbox live, it tells me that the game needs an update, I do so. My console restarts and its reading the disc but i hear an odd sound like the disc is being burned or something, and I get Unplayable Disc. I think the updates detects backups and literally scratches them so they are unusable. Anyway to remove this update? Is it on the Hardrive? Could I just play backups off a memory card? Thanks for any help.

hahaha, the update makes the disc become scratched huh??? never heard that one before. but i highly highly doubt that is even possible. could be that your laser just messed up or you scratched it yourself.

I dont know about that one man.

On a side not: Is it even safe to download updates when you have backups?

hey thanks for the responses. I may be wrong about this but to me it sounded like the 360 was not scratching the disc but burning it like a computer would. It sounded like it was erasing it with the laser. Either way, the backup didn't work and a second backup didn't work. So sumone your backups have worked fine after the update? If so please tell me so I know I'm just doing something wrong.

ok, just for the record here so people do not get the wrong idea. I have done every update for every game that it has ever told me there is an update for, not once has it caused a game to stop working.

So i would ask you:
1. does the disc look scratched? And has your console scratched any other back ups?
2. Do you use good quality media or some cheap crap that is know for doing what you described (working one time and not the next due to the very cheap dye they use making their discs)?
3. do all other backups work fine?
4. Have you had an update for any other backup you have that also caused t to stop working for some reason?

I can tell you that when i do game updates although it says the console may restart, mine has never actually restarted. It just signs me off of Xbox Live and then right back in after the update.
So the root of your problem is something else which hopefully we can help you find.

sounds to me like the laser was just having trouble reading the disc. how old is your system, because my console(1 1/2 years), is starting to have trouble reading discs but in my newer 360 they work fine. both same drive.

1 The disc does look scratched, there's a spot on it. Like it's miscolored.
2 Yes I use Verbs
3 All other games do, but not the 2 Orange Box backups.
4 No, This was the first game update that I installed.

I'll burn a new backup and test it and post back on what happens.
My 360 has never scratched any other games, that's what confuses me. Plus my console did restart, which is weird.

FORGET ALL OF THIS THREAD

Just tested the backup and it works, the same one that didn;t work. Sorry guys, I didn't mean to waste your time. So mmoral of the thread is updates don't kill backups. Again sorry.
