Here's my question. I have couple of AVI movies that I'd love to play with my XBOX 360 at my friend's place on his HD TV. Is there any way to transfer those AVI's to the 360 media file?

At this point I have to burn them to DVDs and watch them this way (again, I don't have an HD TV and we watch those movies on my friend's set) but this becomes too costly now.

Yes, you can. Search afterdawn for "Tversity" and follow the guide to get it up and running. Great program that.

another one would be ORB, and of course you can use Windows Media Player 11 i think as well but that will only play Windows media files while TVersity and ORB will play about anything.

no, because the 360 itself will only play windows media files, so the AVI would have to be converted on a PC first.

OK, agreed. But what if I convert it to WMV format, can I play them then? Also how do I transfer the file itself from PC onto 360 hard drive?

Dont think you can save it directly to the 360 hdd. If you have an external hard drive or usb thingie you can plug it into the 360 and play it from there as long as the files are wmv (possibly mp4 aswell but im not 100%)

Personally if you own an original Xbox that is MUCH better at handling these files and can upscale them to HD (720P) format. And no converting is needed. Is is a much better media machine.

Hey, thanks for the links! I cannot imagine that M$ designed this 360 so that we cannot srore our own stuff on it. This is so dumb! What could be the reason, BTW?

As for this link:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/system...playbackfaq.htm
and the first question about 360 being able to play .avi files, it's a total BS -- it DOES NOT play those. I tried, it simply doesn't see AVI files. Another question WHY SUCH A DUMB MOVE? Nowadays almost all the video files are presented as AVI and no one uses that stupid microsoft's WMV format. I like my 360 but sometimes you'd think, "what part of your body did you think with when you designed it?"

At this point, from what I read so far the easiest and cheapest way to play media on 360 (without hooking up PC, or using DVD discs) is to use a Jump Stick, 4 or 8Gigs. (Of course, with format limitations of the former, one needs several hours to convert AVI's into WMV's :(

PS. As for the original XBOX I don't own one, so all I can do is to take your word for it ...
