Does The Playstation 3 read dvdr's and cdr's

Also i have ordered the 40gb version i have no need for the backwards compatibility i still have a ps2. is it possible to run an external hard drive and plug in it to the usb slot on a ps3??

The ps3 reads burned media(except for games unless you've installed the swap switch). The 40 gig will also read an external hdd.

Make sure the Harddrive is in Fat32 format.

As long as you format it to Fat32.
