I have been out of this game for a year now. I can't believe all the hacks that are available to PSP modders now. I'm from the old school of Devhooks, and swaps.
LOL
So all this custom firmware business is totally foreign to me. Thankfully i'm not a total noob, i do have knowledge about hacking a psp. So i should be able to pick up advise pretty easy. So far it's all making sense to me, but i do have some questions. Currnetly i'm running a Slim with oeFW 3.72.
My first question is...is that FW too high to run customFW? Will i need to back it down with a pandoras battery?
second are there any downsides to running the custom FW? (i.e. loss of any o.e. features)
Obviously my biggest concern is i only have 1 psp, and no access to an older unit. So am i screwed? Do i really need that older FW running psp to make it happen?
And is there any kind of masking protocol in the custom FW? So that if a future game forces you to upgrade to a higher FW you can fake it out and make it think it's already got that update?
That's all i can think of right now. But any help would be awesome since i'm done with school for the holidays and bored as hell and want to futz around with my new psp.
for the psp slim, pandora's battery is the ONLY way to get custom firmware. nothing is loss in custom firmware on the psp slim, the original fat psp loses locationfree player if you want to use the 1.50 kernel addon; psp slim keeps everything.
you aren't screwed, you just going to have to do the hard way, and probably have to spend money. you'll have to open a fat psp battery and remove a pin.
Yeah i was reading that and was hoping that maybe a newer technique came along. D'oh!
I'm not scared to pop that battery open and do the deed, but i was hoping to not need another (2nd) actual psp. It seems like i don't at least need that. If it's just a matter of needing a fat battery and an extra 128mb stick i'm all about doing this. I guess now i need to ask this. once the customFW is installed and i downgrade or whatever. Will i need to run the customFW on every MS i have or once it's downgraded i'm all set?
once you create the magic memory stick on your separate memory stick, that's it. you just use that memory stick, with pandora's battery, to downgrade any psp. keep those two aside, because it'll come in handy later on.
hi, instead of creating a new thread i thought what i would do is ask my questions here. mainly because i want to do the same as the original poster.
ok, im going to buy a psp slim. i want to mod it so i can play iso's from psp games, and psx games, plus use homebrew for emu's. i dont want a second psp to do this, so, if i buy a fat psp battery (official or not?), and a mem stick (any size and/or make? and can it be used like normal afterwards?), i should be able to do it correctly, right?
is there any risk of bricking it? plus, is there a certain firmware i cant do this to? plus, is there anymore advice you can give?
Well from what i DO know for sure the MS needs to be 128mb minimum, and 2gigs maximum. And of course have Magic Gate technology on it.
So far they're saying the new FW 3.73 is the same as 3.72. But as i used to say back in the day...don't upgrade till you know for sure there is a crack. Right now there is no "sure thing" for FW 3.73...so i'd avoid that right now.
And the risk of bricking (again from what i read scouring the forums here) is pretty high if you don't read and follow the instructions to the Tee. If you read everything and understand it you should be fine, but if you skim across the details...you'll end up with a $200 door stop.
so what your saying is, if it has fw 3.73 on it, then i should leave it for now?
i have another question. i just read on a thread (about 6 threads down from this one - cant link to it, using wii browser :P lol) it says that you can do this using the datel service battery. all you got to do is use the newbie install program on your pc to install the firmware hack on the mem card, and it should work... but my question is, would i have to use the psp to access the mem card to use the newbie program thing?
one more question that just popped into my head.... will sony find out that im using a custom firmware if i connect it to the net with the cfw installed?
thanks for the help!
EDIT: just found out on the codejunkies website that they made a slim version of the Max Power Tool Service Battery. im going to buy that and a small mem stick (128 or a 256), use the newbie installer for the memstick and install the firmware that way. Hopefully it will all go according to plan. (fingers crossed)
