I have been burning backups on Verbatim media for a while now, and they used to play fine. Now all of a sudden some of them that were working correctly stopped working ("disc not recognized", NOT the "reset the system" message). Harry Potter, Ratatouille and some more.

The Wii has a Wiikey running firmware 1.9b and the Wii itself runs firmware 3.0. The problems started when on an older Wiikey FW without doing any software updates between the times the games did and don't work. Thought the newer 1.9b firmware might fix it, but apparently not.

The games were burned on a Mac using Disk Utility, but since they worked in the first place (for a few months) and Verbatim is pretty reliable media I guess the burning itself isn't the problem. And even if it's the media, isn't it strange that other games from the same batch of disks do still work and there are so many non-working disks?

Am I missing something here? Please help me out, tnx :)

the most likely case of this is the Laser, When you burn those games on recordable media the write strains the Wii laser and over time it begins to wear out, being that all burns are different everytime. With the games that are no longer working the laser is now probably having more difficulties reading because of the particular burn. Nintendo Lasers in general are very picky and unlike the GC there dosent appear to be any pot to adjust. Try powering off the gamecube load the game in the drive to power it on, when it loads click on the disc and wait to see if it will load you may have to powercycle the wii everytime you want to play these games

Nah - it's not the laser ... it's a common problem some are having. Threads like this are started nearly everyday on this board. Maybe try and make sure the Wii firmware is up to date (3.1) and also your Wiikey firmware (1.9g).

I doubt it's the laser, the Wii isn't used that often. I wouldn't like updating to Wiikey FW 1.9g, since it's a beta and I don't need it (don't run SMG, etc). Besides, since the games used to work on the same FW I think it's hard to blame it on the FW.

Could be the media, although Verbatim should be okay, or some problem with burning Wii iso's on the Macbook. But then again, they used to work :)

well that's what everybody with your problem is saying and I say nothing ventured nothing gained. I don't even get why ppl don't go to 3.1 and I don't get why ppl think 1.9b is not really a beta as well - after all it's not actually the finished article is it? ;)

afaik you can downgrade the Wiikey firmware as well but hey...

I hear you. Does that mean nobody actually tried it and confirmed it's not the solution? :P

Bingo ;)

There doesn't seem to be a logical fix for this, given the rundown, but that doesn't mean to say it can't be fixed by trying something that may not seem to have any direct bearing on the problem. If it fixes it then great - if not I don't really think you lose anything.

Regarding the games that no longer work, are they the same region as your Wii? If they aren't, re-do your settings with the config 1.2 disc to set region over-ride as on. There could have been a very tiny chance that when you upgraded your firmware, your original settings were lost/reset. Just a theory but can't hurt to try.

1. No, it's not only happening when the Wii gets hot.

2. Yes, the games are the same region as the Wii (PAL). Other PAL games do work (also backups).

I will be away from the Wii until next Sunday, so I'll try out some stuff next weekend. Thanks all for the input so far, and more suggestions are always welcome of course :)

So if not the Laser then what is it? I have yet to see an answer.. in examp a game works yesterday yet not today but another one does? just looking at this logically, somebody stated may need an update? well if it was an update needed why did it work yesterday? It wasnt updated then so guess that was luck.. someone even mentioned no logical fix... then there would never be a fix, but reguardless it dosent matter take the advice that you want, but I wish you luck hopefully you do find some type of fix for it.

(though if you do want to start the path of troubleshooting your first step should be to get another modded wii and first swap drives with eachother to see if the problem persists, if not then its your wii good luck,if so we narrowed it down to the drive and modchip. then take the modchips off each drive, and solder the other one onto your current drive, problem persists its the laser if not it's the chip)

Yeah when I say - "no logical fix" - I mean an obvious one. Of course there's a reason for the problem.

My theory - the problem did happen with an update but ppl haven't noticed it until now and one common factor seems to be that ppl haven't fully updated their firmware and Wiikey to the latest versions.

The reason I say that there's no obvious logical reason for the problem is because everybody seems adamant that nothing has changed. Maybe they all missed the problem as it actually occurred with an update? I had to think hard to recall my Wii updates tbh but maybe that's just me :)

I know for sure nothing has changed (Wii FW and Wiikey FW) between the games working and not working anymore.

New theory :P

Wiikey firmware was somehow corrupted (I've seen firmware corruption in other devices on a few occasions) and 1.9b doesn't actually help fix the problem if the Wii is at 3.0. Maybe it fixes it at 3.1 or maybe Wiikey 1.9g fixes it at 3.0 or 3.1?

Does this mean it can become corrupt without updating the FW?

juniR has a valid point there, but if you follow the steps i mentioned below its going to determine if that is the problem or not, if not the wii for that matter, if you want to fix it it's your best bet you got nothing to lose at this point.

honestly I really do hope juniR is right, it would be much easier to replace that wii modchip than a laser if that is the case, and following up on what juniR stated about the updates if you obtain 2 different systems they will most likely be at different points if not updated at all and will give you allot more to work with in determining the issue

I sure am seeing at lot of these type of threads lately. Though almost always it's from people with 1.9g Wiikey firmware, where you have 1.9b.

After seeing all these, I was thinking of writing a poll and then saving the results to a database so they could be graphed or analyzed to see if there's a correlation between different variables that could affect the problem (Wiikey firmware version, Wii firmware version, region, long wire/short wire/quicksolder install, etc).

Correction: the problems started before I did any updates on the Wiikey FW (don't know with what version it shipped?).
