Guys

I am looking to replace my ancient Plextor CDR as it is becoming quite noisy. Can anyone recommend a good all round CD writer? Cheaper the better! :)

If you hurry, you can buy a brand new Plextor for $20 after rebate:

So is this a good drive? I can afford a little more if there are better ones?

Is there a reason that you're not replacing the CD R drive with a DVD R drive? DVD drives do both tasks.

I currently have a CDR and DVDR, I just want to replace them. Are you saying that ANY DVDR can write CDRs?

Plextor is supposed to be the king of the hill when it comes to quality drives (or at least they used to be). So I doubt you could find a "better" one. Even though Plextor has sorta gone out of business, many people still seek after their drives for their write quality. Most of their newest DVD burners have gone down in quality, but that CD burner is supposed to be good (according to the reviews).

Most any DVD burner will also burn CD's.

Yes, any new DVD writable drive will burn cds and dvds and dvd dls. If you have 2 dvd drives then then one can read and the other burn without having to swap dvds out. Also if one gives you trouble, the other can pick up the slack. You can also burn 2 dvds at once with certain programs, Nero being one. A decent dvd drive at newegg.com should be betweeen $30-40.

Plextor is not making new drives anymore. BenQs are not nearly as good. I believe liteons are still good drives.

Word on the street is that Samsung drives also do good CDs. I've burned a few with mine and no coasters so far, and my POS Kenwood in the car is pretty picky.
