Well, I'm planning on purchasing a 360 and want to get a few things clear.
1. ixtreme's latest firmware will "stealth" patch the 360 games so that xbl can't find out.
2. cdclone isn't any better than the free one(can't remember the name)
3. I need a certain dual layer dvd burner and ripper
4. I need a certain sata card
Also, what is the best dual layer disc. If I gather all of these things, will I be set?

So, I just read on a thread that I need a certain drive to rip the games. What would that be and how much would it run me?

1. ixtreme 1.3 is the newest and will play backups. to make them stealth you have to make them yourself. xbl finds out because of the disc , not the drive. you can't DL games from torrents and play them on xbl.
2. clone cd will work, the free one is called IMGburn. i use XBC(xbox backup creator) which works great for me.
3. most dual layer dvd burners will work, there are 2 ways to rip games, with a samsung xbox360 drive flashed with the 0800 firmware, or a Kreon PC drive.
4. a VIA 6421 should do the trick for most drives. with the MS28 samsung drive, you NEED a sata card with a VIA chipset. with the other samsung, the ms25, you can use any sata. if your mobo has a VIA chipset with onboard sata that should be fine as well.
5. verbatim brand dual layer DVD's are the best. by FAR. no coasters, ever.
It is imperative that you MAKE SURE you know as much as you can before you start. read every tutorial possible and dont be afraid to use google and the forum's search function. good luck mate.

reliant is right on all counts. the only thing i'd add is that if you are planning to purchase an Xbox 360, be aware that some of the newer 360s come with dvd drives that are a little more complex to flash. the Hitachi 79fl, for example. you might want to check www.360drives.com to see what drives are in what consoles. goodluck.

kreon drives usually cost about 50-60 dollars and you can get them from ebay.

actually hes not right on all counts. you CAN dl games from torrents and play them on live. ive done this many times when i want to try a game before i waste my money on it.

Thanks for all of the help. I just downloaded the "dummies guide to flashing a xbox 360", but I still have two questions. The first one is, do I apply the stealth patch using imgburn? The second question is, would it be better for me to get a used/refurbished xbox 360 somewhere instead of a brand new one?

if you use a kreon flashed dvd-rom drive, you don't have to "apply the stealth patch." it rips the game in stealth mode automatically using xbox backup creator. imgburn is just used to burn the game onto dual layer dvds.
it's up to you whether you want a new one or a used one. you run risks either way.

Ok, I confused about one other thing that i've been researching. It says that you need to ss.bin. Can you only get the ss.bin if you use the 360's drive plugged into the computer?

please do the following:
1) buy the Kreon sh-d162c drive (ide version) or the sata version of the same drive.
2) install it into your PC
3) download and instal either xbox backup creator or schtrom
4) rip the game, (it will stealth and patch it with everything you will ever need)
5) download and install image burn or clone cd
6) set the layer break correctly
7) insert a blank dual layer dvd
8) select file you want to burn (the little .dvd file in the game folder
9) select burn speed (4x) and click burn.
10) make sure your xbox is flashed, and play the game.
