I'm thinking about getting a new xbox360 and modding it. I was considering getting an Elite. Should I be looking for used pro systems rather than the new Elite's? Are there currently any 360's out there that have drives that can't be flashed, or are all the xbox360 versions on the market today able to be modded with the current firmware versions available?

If you get an Elite you w/proboly get a Beng or a v79. Hopefuly it will be a Benq drive because w/the v79 you have to sodder a chip and thats work and really voids warranty. If you want to get a used one have them power it on and check the tray color. Black is Benq and gray is Hatachi or tashiba look @ the year also on the back to determin how old is the box.

Alright.. I went on a limb and bought an xbox 360 elite.... It has a Hitach 0079FL drive. Unfortunately, all I've found so far states something along the lines of having to buy a mod chip, along with removing epoxy and doing a 9 wire fine solder to a chip... doesn't sound like a simple drive flash to me... =/ Anything new for my drive, or did I just waste my money on something I'll probably destroy if I try to mod it?

Give me a little education here.. =P I've done some fine soldering in the past (Although it was many years ago, and very tricky). I never had to remove epoxy before I soldered however.. It scares me to thing that I can't even read the existing firmware incase I damage the drive before soldering, and potentially loose an expensive piece of equipment... What has everyone else done with this drive? How did you remove the epoxy without damaging the board/solder joints? Is there any way to do it without trying to solder to a very small circuit board?
