I am a fairly new PSP user, and I have been enjoying the homebrew seen, but mainly I use my memory card for playing backup game CSO?s. My question is simple ? are my UMD backups the same as homebrew in the eyes of SONY, or dose SONY not have a problem with running backups?
I have wondered about upgrading the firmware, even if this prevents me from running any homebrew, but could this also prevent me from running backup CSO?s?

Yes they have a problem, even on Sony forums people talking about Homebrew is forbidded now, so if you wanna know, Sony doesnt like Piracy, and even if you own the same game, Sony will still think of it as piracy, so YES Sony has a problem with it.

PSP (+[__]%): 2.80 < 1.50 > 3.40OE-A > 3.71M33-4 > 3.80m33-5 > 3.90m33-3 > 4.01m33-2 + 8gb MSPD
PS3 HD 60GB: 1.33 > 1.90 > 2.01 > 2.17 - NO OS
Nintendo DS [+[__]%]: EZ Flash 5 Plus + 1GB MicroSD + EZFlash 3in1
Nintendo Wii: 3.2U + 1GB SD Card + WiiKey 1.9s

I always thought, like most people ? if I legally buy software/music/films, I should be entitled do what I want with it, including making my own copies. As long as I don?t make any money from doing so, what?s the problem?

Anyway, I?m running 3.3 and have had no problems running my backup copy?s etc (I don?t know if that?s ok or not), so is it a good idea to upgrade to 3.7 for example? What would be the benefits?

You need to type the full correct firmware version. There is no firmware version 3.3 or 3.7 it is 3.3X or 3.7X firmware. The custom names are LE/SE/OE/M33 etc. etc.

So reply back with the exact firmware you have.

Find this by going to System Settings/System Information then tell us what it says under system software.

When asking for help be as specific as you can be.

If your in the USA it is legal under the fair use act to make copies of your investment. But under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) it is against the law to use hardware/software that circumvents copy protection on protected material.

So even tho you have a right to make backups in order to make those backups you will break the law.

If your in another country other then the USA then I don't know your laws.

Thank you

I?m in the UK but I assume the laws are similar to the US. My system software says (3.300EAR+).

Well thats a fist for me. Never heard of that custom firmware before.

So I have no idea how you would update it to the newest firmware unless you use a Pandora battery and magic Memory Stick. I asume maybe it is an older version of OE but not positive.

Do you have a recovery menu?

Press R-Trigger down while turning on the PSP.

Im pretty sure you can make your own copies as long as you don't sell or distribute them. It works the same way like Music CD's and DVD's. The reason Sony threw out the option of being able to play backups on OFW PSP's is because of the fear of piracy.

That?s interesting; I thought it was odd that this firmware name came up with very little Google hits! I purchased my PSP in Hong Kong whilst on holiday. I assumed that people just referred to this version as 3.3X. I wonder if anyone else has 3.300EAR+?

It is 3.30 EAR+ custom firmware.

I did some searching and you can upgrade your PSP from 3.30 EAR+ to 3.52 M33-4.

Just follow the steps below to do this. I would recommend at least going to 3.52 M33-4.

Download the 3.52 M33 CFW linked below. (I have placed all needed files in this download)

3.52 M33 HERE

Extract the file which will extract a UPGRADE_FILES folder. Inside this folder is M33CREATOR (Ignore the RECOVERY folder and kxploitpatcher, kxploitpatcher% they are not needed).

Drag the M33CREATOR folder to the PSP/GAME150 folder.

Now go to game Menu Memory Stick and run the M33CREATOR.

When you run the M33CREATOR it will show loading 150 writing 150 then loading 352 writing 352 something like that. When it is done it should reboot back to the XMB.

Now go to Game Menu Memory Stick and run the 3.52 M33 UPDATE that the M33CREATOR created.

It will flash the files to the PSP when it is finished it will say press X to shutdown. Go ahead and press X after the PSP turns off turn it back on and go to system settings then system information and check to see if your at 3.52 M33 firmware.

If you are then do the below steps. If you are not then you did something wrong and need to redo the steps above.

--------------------------------------

If your at 3.52 M33 format the Memory Stick Make sure you save game saves or any other files you want saved to PC before reformatting the memory Stick).

Download the below 3.52 M33-4 update.

3.52 M33-4 HERE

Now extract the M33-4 file.

Drag the M33-4 folder to the /PSP/GAME150 folder.

Run the update via Game Menu memory Stick. This will only take a few seconds to do.

You are now updated to 3.52 M33-4

You can delete the M33-4 that you placed in the /PSP/GAME150 folder and then drag your backup game saves and files back onto the memory stick.

Go HERE to get your ISO/CSO games working properly.

If you want the latest M33 custom firmware go HERE and update to 3.71 M33-2.

Then after you are at 3.71 M33-2 go HERE and download the 3.71 M33-3 update. Extract the file and drag the UPDATE folder to the /PSP/GAME folder and run the 3.71 M33-3 update under Game menu Memory Stick.

Just make sure your battery level is fully charged or at least above 78% or the custom firmware upgraders will not work. Also make sure you always have your AC Adapter plugged in when upgrading as well.

I cant thank larrylje enough for all his help!
The link to get your ISO/CSO working seems very helpful.

I do however have one question; is it worth upgrading or could I end up with more problems than I started with? I know this is a difficult question, but with downgrading being very difficult, everyone must ask themselves the same question; is it going to be worth it? I know obviously I don't want to go too far.

I have seen some tables on (PSPvault), and if i reed them correctly the listed benefits from 3.30 to 3.52 are ,PS1 Saves via PS3' and 'PS3 Remote Play (Online)'. I am sure there are other differences in the firmware. I am wondering why it is recommended to upgrade?

There more options available plus better PSX 1 support. You also will run into problems with newer games and needing a firmware requirement higher then 3.30 EAR+ or 3.40OE can support.

So yes it would be worth to at least update to 3.52 M33-4.

I decided to follow larrylje?s advise and upgrade to 3.52 MM-4! Excellent advise! His instruction above was easy and worked perfectly!

I did have a couple of games which I had trouble with before (blank screen at startup) but now everything is working perfectly! Everything!

I would recommend anyone doing the same.

Thank you larrylje

Cheers Mate.
