Hello. I've been using DVD Shrink to backup my Region 1 DVD's for a long while now and have had no problems. I recently got a few DVD's from the UK which say they are all Regions but I have been unsuccessful in getting them to play on my Panasonic CP72 DVD player. They will play on my PC but not in my DVD player.

I decided to use DVD Shrink rip them the same way I do with my region 1 DVD's and I still am unable to get them to play. I did a search on this problem and I found a post which said to: "go to the ?Tools> IFO> region patch> region free? in DVD Decypter and then select the folder where your movie's been saved and you will see the list of BUP and IFO files only. Select all of them and hit OK or Open". I did this after ripping with DVD Shrink to no avail as well.

Can anyone help me get these DVD's to be able to play on my DVD player or explain to me why they wont play? Any help is appreciated.

The problem with DVDs from the UK is not the region, but the video format -> these DVDs are PAL format rather than NTSC, which employs a different frame resolution and frame rate.

They will play on your computer because your moniter display is less tightly contrained than your TV in terms of what type of video input it will accept.

In order to play these DVDs you will have to do one of two things:

1) Get a Standalone DVD Player than can internally convert the PAL signal to NTSC (multi-standard players are common in Europe, but don;t seem as common in NA) First check the manual of your existing machine to be sure that you can't do it with your existing machine.

2) Convert the DVDs to NTSC format, which is a rather lengthy process. I do this conversion via Canopus Procoder and am very happy with the results, whereas others use a combination of freeware/trialware programs (namely TMPGEnc Plus and BeSweet). Guides on this process are available at www.dvdrhelp.com.

Good luck...

Thank you for your response. I thought it might have something to do with PAL! I will check out and see what I can do to convert it. Again, I appreciate your help because it was driving me bonkers.
