Is there a way to softmod a playstation 2 without buying anything to mod it(i.e.- Action replay, etc.)?

If this question has already been posted, can someone point me in the rite direction?

Ya but I don't want to buy anything to do it. I have a network adapter already. A memory card. A computer. A USB jump drive. A DVD burner in my computer.
Theres nothing I can use that I already have, or something I can make, to mod a PS2? I can't use an exsiting USB jump drive and burn a copy of HDloader and use them?

You didn't mention a hard drive for the ps2. Do you have one of those?

you need a cheating device to transfer the exploit file or use ps2 elf files. the ps2 won't recognize the usb drive without the proper software.

burning a copy of hdloader will do you no good because your system has to be chipped to recognize it.

also, you will need a IDE hdd to attach to the network adapter. sata hdd is NOT compatable, even with an adapter; the ps2 expansion bay is designed for a IDE hdd only. there is no space left when in the bay.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd

wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

no. your system has to be exploited already. there is no way getting there without getting a cheating device (ARMAX with usb compatability recommended).

if you're gonna go the cheap way, then borrow a friend's ARMAX, get a ps1 game, and have at least 2mb free on your ps2 memory card. you need the ps1 game to trigger the exploit. no other way to exploit, unless you get a modchip with flash memory.

ARMAX = action replay MAX

i used the independence exploit and ARMAX to get my system exploited. the best $20 i've spent for the ps2.

some have the cd only, others have a usb flash drive or 16mb memory card. but the one in the link is the one.

Now how does this work,Is it a one time deal and I'll be able to play backups and load from a hdd? (i.e.- I'll only have to use the ARMAX once.)

What does the action replay do?
At this site, it doesn't seem you need a ARMAX. You just need a way to transferr data from your PC to your memory card.

it is a one time thing, but even the link you posted listed action replay. there is no way to transfer files by normal means to a ps2 memory card. the ps2 system file cannot be copied to another card directly; it will refuse to be copied. that's why you need some cheating device. you would create a system file that contains the exploit, convert it to the necessary file format of the cheating device, upload it, and uncrush the file.
