I have a Duo 3 ultra modchip and I'm trying to mod my ps2. My friend and I have some soldering experience on circuit boards, but there is a step we've been stuck on. In step 5, we have to solder onto thin wire strips. I had to switch to solder with flux to get it to stick. We happily found success with the first wire.

However, the solder leaks over to the neighboring areas and the desoldering braid is too thick to take off solder between two wired points. Meaning in step 5, the spaces in between the parts that need to be soldered are getting covered. How do we remove the solder on those points or avoid leaking to there in the first point? How do you successfully solder the gold strips?

Thanks so much for your help.

I don't know if it would work, but you could possibly put something in between the areas where it is leaking. something that is heat resistant though. I've never soldered anything, but I figured that it may stop the leaking. Sorry if that doesn't work or is a totally bad idea.

Alright, heres what you do. Clean up any solder thats on the board. To do this, lay the de-solder wick across any points in 5 and hold the soldering iron there for 2 seconds. Remove it. You should see solder on the braid. If not, then your fine.

Go to radio shack and buy solder flux. (not just solder with flux in it) Take a tooth pick, put a small amount of flux at the tip of the tooth pick and touch the toothpick tip to the point you want to solder.

Before even trying to attach a wire, take your 15 watt soldering gun, and heat it up. When its hot, take some solder and touch it to the tip of the gun. Then take the tip of the soldering gun and touch it to the point on the board to which you applied the flux to. When the gun touches this spot, it should fill the entire spot that you have put the flux on the board with solder.

If you want to make sure no solder has joined with the point next to it, take a razor blade and gently scrap in between the points that you need to solder.

This should help you out. Let me know if you have more questions.

KMK,

thanks so much for your help. Didn't realize the soder w/flux wouldn't work on it's own. Will drop by radioshack tommorow. And for those second group of points, we might have trouble. We haven't even gotten up to it yet. Thanks a lot.
