yea, if you really dont know what your doing with a computer, i would definatly suggest xp, or even a mac.

the age old question.
I would say for me it is XP all the way. It uses less resources and will have way better program compatibility.

xp is also not a memory hog like vista is. vista needs 1 plus gigs of ram if not using onboard video. if onboard video then 2gigs plus.

Right now the answer is no argument, XP wins hands down for compatibility and stability.
Vista may catch up later but it all depends on when the next windows is coming out because, if its only 3-5 years away, I believe the majority of people that can will just wait for the next Windows release and skip Vista.

Well I think XP is a upgrade from vista, Would hardly call it a downgrade.
Just my opinion though.
But yeah XP all the way.

I'm building a computer at the beginning of the year and I have XP Pro in my cart, not any Vista. My wife has Vista Home Premium on her laptop, and aside from the search/ windows explorer upgrades I'm not impressed yet even though theres been no problems. It works fine for me, but I'd still rather have XP.

Um, age old? Me sucked, XP kicked 2000's ass without a problem.
Vista sucks rock hard cox. Get XP it works great.

I think you spoke too soon about vista. Wait till you have the problems of compatibility then you will crawl back to XP.
Vista is only good to look at and it is only one of the way your big brother Bill gates made his money. I was like you believing vista will do a good job but I was greatly disappointed a lot of programs could not run by vista and most of the applications still do not have the drivers for vista. In additional to that vista need min 1gig ram to run. For it to run soomthly it need at least 2 gigs. of ram. The speed for xp and vista is approx. the same. Majority out there will definitely support my definition here because I am sharing my bad experiences of using vista as an OS. One word to describe vista Quote:

yea, i mean, i have had vista for 6 months now, and i am a in the current process of obtaining a degree in computer engineering, so i have had multiple programing programs, etc. running on it. I have switched out graphic cards, dvd drives, etc and have had no problem with any of the drivers. and everyone keeps on saying "holy crap, you need atleast 2gb of ram for it to run ok." well, im guessing everyone here arguing about operating sytems knows a little something about computers, and are at least kind of end to them. that said, if you are one of those people, and dont have at least 2gb of ram in your computer, then its time for an upgrade anyway.
and so no problems with vista, and still people are saying that they want to downgrade back to xp. Vista has all the features of xp, plus even better ones, and the layout of the os is definalty a lot better. if its working great, why would you want to downgrade?

Such a simple question... and a really easy answer..
If it's made in Redmond it's crap...
X11 windows manager is the best windows.. built on x-windows from 1978.. stable, reliable and skinnable.
/me sits here and waits for vista sp1 enabling all the drm.. and considers the benefits of being far too 1337 to pay M$ for "broken by design".. "pay now.. buy later" software
sorry.. i had to come back and comment on this.. best laugh of the week..

spoken like a true sheeple. If you REALLY know what you are doing with a computer you will not be using any proprietary paid stuff at all.. everything will be open source and self compiled. heh heh heh
and if you really don't know what you are doing can I suggest learning some stuff before wasting our time with pointless beginner questions. There are sites that charge for n00b support, and paid software users should use those.
