I jus bought the 40g ps3 for my son as a gift
my tv only does 1080i
will it make a difference if i use a componet over hmdi?
i see they both do 1080i so wha's the diference?

Aside from the fact that component has 3 video outputs, and no audio, versus the HDMI which is only one cable that transfers both video and audio, HDMI cables offer the highest quality of audio and video.

For my PS3 to the HDTV, I use both the HDMI and optical audio cable--only because the speakers on my TV suck (and my home theater system kicks ass) ;)

i'm just lost when it comes to the video
i plan on usin' the optial out for sound
so if i'm runnin' hdmi at 1080i aill it look any better than runnin' componet at 1080i

the size of your tv is also a factor. if its over 40inches hdmi will be better. if its smaller the difference is minimal

so for the most part hdmi is mostly a plasma thing?...

No it isn't. HDMI provides a higher quality and more crisp image. I'd go with HDMI, you can't go wrong with it.
