Warranty question on used RROD 360s

Hey guys, if I buy a broken and used Xbox 360 with 3 RROD rings, does it matter if the console is registered or not for me to send it in and get it repaired? Or will they only repair it for the original owner? Would there be any way for me to get it registered on my name, so it could be sent to me instead of the person I'm buying it from?

Ask the seller if he registered it. If he didn't then you can register it in your own name.
If he did register it, then pass.

Thanks, I was asking because I'm thinking that I could get a RROD 360 really cheap off Ebay and then send it in to get repaired free, but I didn't know if it mattered if it was registered or not. Thanks

That's pretty dishonest don't you think? Don't you think the seller would have tried to send it back to MS if it was under warranty?

Why not just call Microsoft & ask how you can transfer the xbox to your name? They can't completely lock it down ... I mean, what to do if you sell yours, its still under warranty, and it fails ... and I think it would be illegal for them to not warranty (if its still under a valid warranty) the xbox if it is sold to someone else while under its original warranty period ... a simple call will give you your answers

I thought that all 360s since launch are covered by warranty through the 3-year extension, unless I'm wrong. A lot of 360 owners still don't know that they can get it repaired for free under the extended warranty. It might be wrong in a way to buy it, but they're selling, and if they want someone to buy it I'm willing to pay.

All 360's ARE covered by a 3 year warranty for the RROD ... if someone buys a new one, sells their RROD one, its 100% notbeing dishonest or taking advantage of anyone - they don't want to use their warranty, thats their choice!!!

I purchased 2 360's from eBay on different occasions, sent them in for repairs, and then resold them. There's nothing dishonest about it. The consoles are for sale and all you have to do is be the highest bidder. There's no lying, tricking, swindling, etc, etc. They want to sell it. If they don't want to bother with finding out their options for repairing it, that's not your fault. Go for it.

Well if they are dumb enough to sell it and not worry about getting warranty work done, then it's their loss. lol, I'll start looking for those too then.

ok, sorry for extending this thread too long, but I just read the warranty and I have one more question. I noticed these two statements in the warranty:
"Submit proof of purchase in the form of a bona fide, dated bill of sale, receipt, or invoice (or a copy) evidencing that your request for service is made within the Warranty Period."
AND
"This Limited Warranty applies to the original retail purchaser only and may not be assigned or transferred. However, some jurisdictions extend the protection of implied warranties to subsequent consumers and therefore this limitation may not apply to you."
Would the invoice from Ebay be a valid proof of purchase? and also does registering the console under my name make me the "original retail purchaser"? I'm guessing it does.
Thanks...and sorry I just really want to make sure I am not wasting my money, and that I can actually do it.

That's exactly it... go for it. Just make sure to ask if the warranty sticker is intact, if it's ever been opened or modded, if it's ever been registered, and if it's ever been banned from LIVE.

You don't need to submit any purchase info. MS goes by the serial number. When it's purchased it goes into their database. You can go to Xbox.com and register the 360. They just ask your name, address, and the serial number. Once you register, you can then check how much time is left on the 1 year warranty. When MS sends you the return box to ship the 360 in, you don't have to provide any paperwork. No receipts, no nothing.
Now, if you happen to get a 360 that's has been registered by someone else, and you try to register it, that's when MS asks for proof of purchase.

Thanks Bhetrick. So when you bought yours from E-bay, did you ask the seller before about if it had been registered and if the warranty sticker gone?

Yes. And make sure you do, too. With eBays policies, if something is not in the auction description and a buyer doesn't ask, then it's not the sellers fault and the buyer is stuck with it.
Just be careful. With all the bannings, there's a lot of banned consoles for auction. Plus there's a lot of people on there who make a business of reselling used consoles. I avoid those auctions also. Also, make sure to look at their feedback. See it they've had any recent problems.
The 2 consoles I bought were complete Premiums, everything was included, from average eBayers.
