Can my premium 360 with HDMI upconvert DVDs?

I don't normally watch dvds but my parents do and now that I'm back for winter break I was wondering if it's worth the trouble hooking my 360 up to their 40 something inch HDTV to watch movies.

The 360 actually got bad reviews as a dvd player. It doesn't upconvert, either.

I do use mine, though, to play different region movies from dvd+rw's which my region 1 dvd player won't play.

Yeah, I saw those reviews, but I'm pretty sure most of them were for the old 360 without HDMI. I haven't seen anything about the new ones. I think I read somewhere that the Elite's upconvert DVDs but I'm not completely sure.

to be honest, game systems have never really been great DVD players. It is part of their package but they are made to be gaming machines. I would always advise that you buy a seperate stand alone DVD player and you will get much better quality. Now the original xbox can upscale, but only to 720P and only using XBMC

K, I found my answer here:

I also tested a dvd I had. I don't know if it's upconverting or not, but it's really not much of a difference from our regular DVD player.

I really need to convince my parents to buy an hd-dvd or bluray player one of these days. :\

They know nothing about technology. They bought an HDTV yet they have no HD sources. :\ I tried to convince them to get the HD package from Comcast but they still haven't.

*sigh* Sorry, didn't mean for this to turn into a rant.

the xbox 360 hd dvd player is only 129.99 at toys r us and on amazon.com it might be easier to convince them to get it since its low in price.i know it upconverts through vga but im not sure if it has an hdmi port...hope i helped a little. although i honestly dont think its wise to get either blu-ray or hd-dvd yet unless ur fine with having a splintered dvd collection. When i say that i mean having some blu-ray and some regular dvd, not just old dvds from your collection but new movies like the bourne ultimatum which is out only on dvd or hd-dvd(like heroes, matrix and so on). On the other hand if you go with hd-dvd you'll end up losing all the movies made by sony such as the spider man trilogy. I do think blu-ray will end up winning or it will be a stalemate i dont have hd-dvd pulling it off although i think they are equal in quality other than blu-rays storage compacity advantage which is extraneous at this point.Im sure if MS would have included the hd-dvd player in the 360 it wouldve indeered movie studios to side with them due to the early lead the 360 had on the comp. but it wouldve pissed off the gaming fans since the price would have been jack up like the ps3 at launch hence the ps3 is suffering. well, good luck at any rate and the long message is due to bordem.

only problem with using your game system as your DVD player is that you are just running it harder than it needs. When i buy a game system, then games is about all i use it for (as far as anything that goes in the DVD drive that is)

Now with the old Xbox i used it for a lot more like streaming movies from my PC, streaming shoutcast radio, and upconverting DivX files to 720P. But as far as discs i only use that for games as there is no need to wear out your laser any sooner.

I have a regular upscaling DVD player and regular discs and the movies look just fine. So i see no reason to buy an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player or discs. Now i can tell you there is quite a difference in the regular and HD TV signals (if you have satalite). If you have "digital cable" then i am not sure. i put the quotes as digital cable is not a true digital signal, it is just upscaled, where as satalite is a true digital picture and with the HD package it is run through HDMI. And the picture is really great on a high end TV.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I probably will end up waiting to see which format wins, but if I were to get something now, it would probably be an hd-dvd player since I know for a fact at some point in the future I'll end up buying a PS3.

I have yet to see HD through digital cable, but I have watched HD on my LCD TV through a regular antenna and it was very nice. I also regularly watch HD through my computer.

The dvd I tested on my 360 didn't look any better than using our regular dvd player (which doesn't upconvert) so I probably won't be using it to watch movies. I was just curious. Thanks though.

If you want to see High Definition movies on your xbox 360 without the additional HD Drive, you can always find or convert HD movies into MP4 or wmv format that will play on the 360 and through component cables on a High Def TV the picture looks really nice. Just FYI
