WHat is the OE-A firmware? 3.XX or higher?

If so the Quickest and safest way is using this guide HERE. It will walk you through creating a magic memory Stick and Pandora Battery that will install straight to 3.71 M33-2 custom firmware.

sorry for the late reply. I was out of town.

I have fat (old) psp with Dark_AleX's 3.40 OE-A custom firmware.

I read your guide but still not fully understand the proceed creating the magic memory Stick and Pandora Battery.

Why is it so hard to update from 3.40 oe-a to 3.71 M33-2?

pandora's battery is only one way to upgrade your psp

see this guide
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/569454
if you follow the guide
first you need to install 3.52m33
then install update 4 and you will have 3.52m33-4
only then you can install 3.71m33

It isn't that complicated to create the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora Battery. If you use that option your PSP will install stright to 3.71 m33-2 which all you would need to do is run the 3.71 m33-4 update.

If you do it manually you will need to go from 3.40 OE-A to 3.52 M33 to 3.52 M33-4 to 3.71 M33 to 3.71 M33-4 to get the latest firmware.

How safe if I upgrade firmware manually because i dont have a second battery?

If I brick the psp during upgrading firmware, is there anyway to recover?

You don't need a second Battery. Just backup the Battery EEPROM and you can convert the battery back to normal after you upgrade.

This guide HERE explains how to do all of it.

If you brick the PSP during a manual install you would need to use a Pandora Battery + magic memory Stick to recover. So you might as well use that to update to 3.71 M33-2 in the first place. it is the safest way to do it.

If you want to do it manually then go HERE and use this guide to update to 3.52 M33-4 (This needs to be performed before updating to 3.71 M33).

Then go HERE and follow this guide to update to 3.71 M33-2 Then all you need to do is update to 3.71 M33-4 which you can get HERE.

It works. Thanks larrylje.

how do I use the 1.50 firmware add-on? what is the advantage?

do I need to update from 3.71 to 3.71 M33-2 then M33-3 and then m33-4?

You can go straight to 3.71 M33-4 update.

You can install straight to 1.50 ADD ON-2 which is worth installing if you use allot of homebrew/emulators that need 1.50 kernel support.

Even tho the recovery menu has 1.50 kernel option it isn't applicable till you install the 1.50 ADD ON.

One more question.

If I buy a brand new PSP from store right now, can I downgrade it? do you have tut?

yes, pandora is the only way if the firmware is higher than 3.50.

Here are 5 of the best guide

and since you have a custom firmware already it would be very simple

but also if you buy a slim then just use the slim pandora guides

well here are my favorite 5

Regular Pandora

Pandora Easy Installer

Pandora Using A Custom Firmware To create

Universal Unbricker DC-3 + MS Multi IPL Loader
Ultimate Pandora's Magic Stick - Emerald Version

You place 1.50 kernel homebrew in the /PSP/GAME150 folder. You place 2.XX or higher kernel homebrew in the /PSP/GAME folder.

A PSP SLIM can not be downgraded to 1.50 firmware but if you get a new PSP SLIM from the store you can use your FAT PSP and create a Pandora Battery + Magic Memory Stick that will install 3.71 M33-2 to the new PSP SLIM (the 1.50 ADD ON is not compatible with a PSP SLIM so you can not install that).

HERE is a guide on how to create the Pandora Battery + Magic Memory Stick.
