wii 2.2J risk of games needed help

I have just bought a back up a Super mario strikers charged US version. When i insert it in my wii, something showed up in Japanese I think it is asking for an update but i dont read japanese. I can see it is loading, i was afraid so i turned off my 2.2J wii. Is there anyway for me to play Super mario strikers charged or i shuld update my wii first or nothing will happen after the update

i have downloaded the latest firmware which is 3.1J but why when i put Super mario strikers charged in. It still asks for the update
