Hello Forum members,
I bought a phat PSP from a guy in Ebay, described as 'UMD not working, otherwise OK', a few days ago. The PSP came and was in good condition with Sony FW 3.71 installed with UMD not working.
Checked the UMD, the laser was lighting, the drive was moving etc. Cleaned the laser to no effect. Decided to change to CFW and used Pandora (wow, what an innovation!!) to get CFW 3.71M33-4 installed. Now the PSP would recognise games in the memory stick but would not play them (including GNU Chess!!). The UMD still doesn't read the disks, but keeps spinning...
Any ideas as to what might be wrong??

Boot into Recovery mode.
Goto "Configuration ->"
Then there should be a big menu.
Go down to "UMD Mode."
Press X over "UMD Mode" until it says "UMD Mode<Currently: Sony NP9660 - NO UMD ->"
Exit Recovery then have fun.

Thanks smlvfx for the link. But my problem is that I can't play my games from the memory stick. I thought my 4 Gig memstick is the problem and used the 2 Gig from the other PSP and even that didn't work! My thoughts are: if modding with CFW is not a problem, is there a chance for the motherboard to be the reason for not reading the memstick? Thanks in advance

You can't even play iso's and cso? I thought if that worked then just avoid umd's or back them up and play. Why did you buy it though if you knew the umd doesn't work?
My PSP History:
1.00 >1.5>2.00>1.5>3.03 OE-C>BRICKED>Pandora battery ^_^>1.5>3.03 OE-C>3.52 M33-2>3.71 M33-4

i dont know if the motherboard can cause that problem
is it the same memory stick that you used to make pandora's battery?
backup what you need from the memory stick ,format the memory stick in the psp and try again
when you say that the psp recognise the games in the memory stick but would not play them what exactly do you mean
when you go in the psp menu to game -»memory stick the games show in there ,or they show as corrupt data or there is nothing there?
or they show and when try to start the game you get an error code?

If you used a Pandora Battery + Magic Memory Stick plus updated to the M33-4 update then the PSP is reading the Memory Stick perfectly fine. Sounds to me like you have a setting enabled that is causing the issue.
Go HERE and try all these steps to see if you can get the ISO/CSO working properly.
