Ok. I'm really confused now. I'm familiar with the PS2 modding scene, but is totally new to PSP mod. What's with all these different firmwares? And what's the difference between EO, CF, Dark_Alex, M333, devhook, etc? I may be wrong, but to my understanding so far, you'll have to upgrade so you can upgrade even more, or upgrade to downgrade and then upgrade again and vice versa. I'm lost!?!?!?! All I want to know is, how do I mod my PSP to get the best and lastest or oldest firmware, which brings me to my next question. Which firmware is best and is upgrading better or downgrading and why? I just bought my PSP two days ago. It has the latest default firmware and comes with a USB cord. I bought a couple of games with it. Basically, everything just came right out of the box with no mod whatsoever. With all these info, what can I do to mod it so that it'll let me play my ps1 and umd and install applications? I've been searching and found a lot of forums that says in order to upgrade or downgrade I need to already have a custom firmware. I don't even know what a custom firmware is, nor do I know how to install one. I want to mod my psp, but do not know where to begin. Can anyone help me to understand or at least point me to a direction? Is there any good step by step tutorial or sites? Thanks and any input are greatly appreciated.
Devhook is outdated and was used to emulate firmware versions so you could play ISO and homebrew.
Then came custom firmware which made playing ISO/CSO and homebrew allot easier.
SE/OE/LE/M33 etc. etc. is custom firmware coded by Dark Alex.
SE was first then OE then LE(leaked edition reason for the LE which I don't think was completed) and then M33 I think that is the way the versions where released.
The most updated and best firmware out at this time is 3.71 M33-4 custom firmware.
Depending on what type of PSP you have and what firmware version you have will depend what you can do with it.
A PSP SLIM has restrictions with it. It can not be downgraded to 1.50 and you don't get the benefits of 1.50 kernel homebrew but most of the homebrew has been ported to the PSP SLIM but not all.
If you have a PSP FAT then you can downgrade it to 1.50 firmware which there is no need to downgrade to 1.50 firmware anyway. It also will have 1.50 kernel support when installing any custom firmware which has better compatibility with most homebrew out there.
More then likely you have a PSP that has a firmware that is 3.51 or above (To find out go to System Settings then System information and the firmware version is under System Software). If it is 3.51 or above you will need to use a Pandora Battery + Magic Memory Stick (Universal Unbricker V3) to install custom firmware to the PSP FAT/SLIM.
It is easier to create these if you have a PSP that has custom firmware already on it. So if you have a friend or have a PSP yourself with custom firmware already on it then go HERE and follow this guide to create the Pandora Battery and Universal Unbricker V3. This will install 3.71 M33-2 to your new offical firmware PSP.
If you don't have access to a PSP that has custom firmware then go HERE and follow this guide. You can use the Easy Installer to create the Universal Unbricker V3 on your official firmware PSP but you will either have to buy a Datel Tool Battery or Hardmod the PSP Battery to get the 3.71 M33-2 to your official firmware PSP.
