Do playing backed-up DVDs wear down the laser?

It's come to my attention that with videogame consoles, playing a backed-up copy of a game would continually wear down the laser that was reading the cd-r/dvd-r media, until it was dead, and in need of a replacement.

I was wondering if this was the same for dvd players? (and cd-players, but that's off topic)
