anyway, the pad came off my board when i was trying to solder my wiikey. What is the best way to solder it onto the IC leg? the legs are soo damn small and it is so hard to put such a small amount of solder on it.

there are 2 ways you can do it.
A) usually thre is a small amount of solder at teh base of the leg. This is the i deal place to solder it. you need to hold the wire as still as possible and apply te heat.
B) take your 30awg wire and srip off about 1mm-2mm. Try to tin the wire and se if you can make the tiniest solder spike on it. use that and some flux to attach the wire to the leg.

MAKE SURE YOUR IRON IS CLEAN. use a cold damp sponge or a metal file to clean as much solder as possible of the iron. It is incredibly easy to bridge the legs on the chip.

agree 100% you can use one strand from an ide cable too works very well. Get a magnifying glass as well and take your time, you can do it

Hello m8 ok, if the legs are still bridged solder braid is the best option to try and remove it, you can also try the inside of a piece of coaxial cable (standard tv aerial cable) that is normally copper threads woven together, dip that in a little flux and keep trying you should get the majority of it off if not all.

To solder to the leg of the chip the easiest way ive found is if you dont have any 30 awg wire use a single strand from an ide cable (connects your hard drive,cd or floppy drive to your motherboard ) nip the end so you have around 2-3mm of bare wire showing and dip the bare wire in some flux, just touch that end to your soldering iron that has some solder on it and it will coat itself with solder from the iron , line up the wire on the top of the drive chip so that the end youve just tinned is touching the leg you want to solder to. If your not confident enough to solder it how it is once you have the wire in the position you want just put a tiny drop of superglue on the cable so it will stay in place, grab your magnifying glass and a small needle or sharp hobby knife and just nudge that tip into place above the leg you want once done apply the irons tip for 1-2 seconds and voila the wire should stay on the leg right were you want it.

It helps a lot if you grab a file or your dremel and file your soldering irons point down to a sharpish tip.

Some of the guys on here can give you better ways to do this ive only done about 30 installs now im still an amateur.
