Hi, I've read that bad quality DVDs or DVD+R can ruin your Wii's laser. Is this true? Will it make the laser so bad it wouldn't read games anymore? If so, what brand should I switch to and +/-?

Yes the laser can be ruined by bad quality discs. Backups in general stress the laser more than originals do. The de facto best discs used by most people are verbatims.
I've always used +r discs, not sure it makes a difference though.
