After playing with my dads Xbox 360 i'm considering getting myself one. I live in Thailand so it's close to impossible to purchase an un-modded console.

I want to play on XBL and will happily purchase the originals to do so, but can I play backed up games offline, then swith to originals for online without getting banned?

There's no guarantee that you won't get banned. Some people who never played backups, but had a modded firmware got banned.
