You can still play those games
Serial Number of the Ps3 system and take a wild guess when it was purchased as every console has a years manufactures warranty.
They come to your door take your one and give you a new one, they came next day for me.
Yep say you lost the receipt.

Thats good to know. I too update with every firmware and have had no problems. I just got paranoid when people started dropping off of my friends list with bricked ps3s.

Resistance, the 80 GB model, and firmware 2.10 was the lethal combo for me. My PS3 died two days ago. I went and exchanged it for a new one at walmart b/c I didnt feel like waiting a month.

i just got my ps3 for christmas. and six days later its not recognising any discs that we put in, whether they are DVD's cd's etc.
The only update we put on our 40Gb console was the one that we needed to play nfs pro street. which is 1.9 something.
i'm pretty sure it has sh*t itself. (excuse the french)
i've restarted it and now its reconfiguring the system but its idling as in the loading bar still ( 2 hours later) says 0%
is the best thing i can do is ring customer service?

Ye, call sony.
They will ask you to perform all kind of things, like reset ur console and format hard drive. Say that uve done it all and go from there

thx! i called them and the first lady i talked to treated me like an idiot and said "how could you break it in six days?"
so i hung up and tried again. the guy told me to take it back to the store and get a replacement one.
i went to the store and got my money back cuz they said that the ps3's they were sent were faulty and they've gotten a few back already that day. then walked straight into another store and brought a new one.
the first one i got looked like it was tampered with, thinking back on it now after opening this new one. all the plastic packaging was missing and the booklets were floating around the box. also my brother checked the harddisc (of the old one) and found that someone had tried taking it out before (or it was bad workmanship) cuz the screws were all shreaded.

mine died today it was a 80g just got it dec 2 and i never even played it do to the fact i don't have any good games for it .
went and got a movie (blu-ray) today tried to watch it and it wouldn't read any disk tried moto storm that came with it and nothing no read errors or anything just acted like the disk wasn't there.. 360 still going strong ..Thanks for nothing sony

Why? Because it is not a big problem comparatively. Sony's product has a less than 3% failure rate (same for the Wii and both are within industry standards) whereas their competitor is way above 33% with an admission by MS that ALL of their product line has the ability to fail.

Oner, I have to disagree with you there unless I see some facts to back that up. It seems to me a good bit of AD members have had faulty PS3's. From the reports on AD alone it has to be more than 3%.

They did in depth research from the sellers of the consoles Eb games etc. rather than just going on what the individual companies claim. The reason it appears that there's so many is because these are HELP forums and where do ppl turn to when somethings wrong with their systems? a HELP forum.

Its just that alot of people post that their blu-ray drive has stopped reading discs, so many couldnt even bother to search threads like this one as it explains alot, and to rename the thread broken ps3 drives, just my opinion.
Dont forget i read on different forums that they have newbies signing up to say their ps3 has broken (360 fanboys), not saying that the people here are but it happens.
40GB seems the console breaking alot, im glad i got my launch 60gb PS3.

It's true, there were statistics that showed that the failure rate was 3% and there is not a single product that doesnt ever breaks. But those statistics were released the first month after the release. The most units were still in stock or in shops. And now we discover that some PS3's Drive tends to break for no reason (every PS3 forum has topics about this). Now it looks like the failure rate is atleast 13% and growing.
And dont give me this bullCrap about 360 fanboys joining forums and claiming their ps3 has broke. Even if there are some, its probobly not more than 0.1% of people who actualy DO have a broken PS3. (there are far greater numbers of PS3 fanboys that flame that they have a red ring on their xbox)

Lol, i ever said anything about you calling me something.
I just say thats its all bullshit. Just some madeup stories by PS3 fans to protect their console.
Lets see how well the failure rate will do when PS3:
1. Will be 2y.o. like xbox
2. Will use 100% of its power

Yeah maybe, but at least Sony have good customers services here in the England, just everyone remember to backup their save data everyweek.
