Hey!
I'm sorry I think this may well have been posted before, so please tell me if it has.
I have a partition on my HDD (D: and C:), C: being my main one running the OS and all the software, while storing my data. However, I want to back up all my files on to partition D:, and format C:, reinstalling windows. Once I reinstall windows, I can put my files back on to the C: drive or just keep it on partition D:.
Is it possible? Will formatting C: affect D:, since physically they are one drive? Some one told me it's not possible to do what I want, though he was unsure. From what I've heard otherwise, it can be done, and is one of the reasons people partition their HDD.

Thanks,

Rich.

Well I think the most simple way to do it would be to select all the folders in C, except the windows folder, and copy/paste them in the D partition. However, some files may be in use, and wont allow you to copy/paste them.

I think you would get better luck with this in the Windows part of these forums, as I dont believe this is a hardware related question.

If you were to wipe the C partition, the D partition would still be there, as it would appear as 2 HDDs when wiping.

In response to the first part of what you said; it's not the file moving/copying part that I'm concerned about, and there are some files I want to leave behind; viruses etc.
I will also try in that other section of the forum, I wasn't sure where to post this but as it what to do with the HDD, I thought hardware would be more correct.
This is what I wanted to know; I did think that it would be seen as two HDDs when wiping, so thank you. This means then that I can back up my important files on to D: and wipe C: clean, and still have the files remaining on D: afterwards?

Thanks!

moved to correct forum. yes can move data to d:drive then format & load windows back onto c:drive. all programs will have to be reloaded as most likely won't work if copied to d:drive then copied back to c:drive. i have a 160 gig hd partitioned into a 40 for windows & 120 for data. already had to reload windows because of problems & didn't loose info off the d: partition.
