Maybe a poor avi (download) file with bad audio to begin with.

...or maybe you don't have the proper codec installed. Run the avi through G-Spot or AviChecker and see if you have the proper codecs.
You could also run the file through AviFix and see if it has any errors that could be repaired.

G spot is a nice freeware that should tell you if you've got the proper codec.

almost guarantee gspot will tell you ac3 sound. this pretty much means its "surround sound" Its probably a 5.1 stream, and you are only hearing 2 of the 6 channels. some software will downmix to 2.0. a standalone dvd player will downmix automatically, and playback fine. on the pc, vlc will also do this for you.
also, in your pc audio properties, make sure it is set to 2.0 (2.1 if you have a sub)

@philzone
I bet you're right. I got around that problem a while ago by installing ffdshow. Install that, and you will have an excellent codec coverage.

I use ffdshow for encoding also, it has lots of filters/options . It also supports subtitles(and since I don't speak chinese or japanese, that comes handy:))
