Hello all.. I was hoping someone could possibly think of the reasons that my recently chipped Wii (with Wiikey) is not working correctly:

I have the 1st gen. Wii as well as an authenticated Wiikey, just that I haven't had time to chip it myself, so I went to someone who's chipped my other friends' Wiis, and none have had any problems. He did it within an hour but he didn't have a boot up/update disk available so I took mine home to update it myself. I already purchased SMG previously, so my Wii had already been updated automatically to 3.1us prior to it being chipped. People have claimed that it won't affect it, therefore, that's why I had chipped it, also without too much hesitation (especially since the chip had been purchased a while ago).

I had gone home and read up on the forums as well as followed the guide from the sticky:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/597460

I DL'd the 1.9g update and ran it through the system. The update ran fine; 2x: for the test as well as the update itself. I even had Homer chime in. (BTW, considering the update DID run, that means the Wiikey was soldered on correctly, right? I ask, because I could not verify that it was soldered on correctly, since I didn't see the gentlemen install it myself, and therefore wouldn't know whether or not it was soldered on with no way to verify it myself, since he also put back the casings.)

I installed my original of SMG, but there were no updates (I naturally assumed there wouldn't be, since as I said, I had been playing SMG previous to installing the Wiikey).

I DL'd and used the config1.3 zip file from:
http://rapidshare.com/files/48731676/config1.3.zip.html
to boot up and use the 1.3 config disk to set it to region free ON(once again, this does verify that the wiikey as well as everything else is working, correct?)

After ALL that, I finally tried to play something old just to verify. It was a burned copy of Metal Slug that I used on a TDK+R burned at 4x as well as 2x. Both turned out to be non-readable. I assumed since I burned the boot disks using TDK's, that it would be readable, but I naturally switched just in case.
I then purchased some Verbatims -R as recommended and burned Wario Ware at 4x and 2.4x. Still no luck.

All my originals still work, fortunately, including my GameCube games. I don't think I left out any details. Any assistance/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So, basically, we have this situation:

1) Config and Update discs run fine (That means the Wiikey is OK)

2) Game backups, new and old do not run(Even thoug made with the same burner and on the same media as the Config and Update discs)

?!?!?!

I have a few questions:
Are the Config and Update discs GCOS discs?
What burner do you have? (Brand and Model number, please)
What software do you use to burn the DVDs?

Where's the party?!?

Thanks so much for your assistance, Rafa.. especially since you seem to be the one knowledgable about the situations, looking from the other forum posts... but to answer your questions, to the best of my ability:

That is correct, that the game backups old and new are made w/ the same media and burner as the Config/Update disks (the update/config disks were originally made with TDK+Rs.. but when I could not get the backups to work, I switched to Verbatims-R's for use on the backup disks.

For the Config/update disks, you asked if they are GCOS disks. I wasn't positive how to answer that question. I burned the ISO of 1.9gBootUSA (with padding, obtained from the sticky forum) and the iso of the Wiikey config1.3zip file in order to set my region free cord to ON. Both were used with TDK+R's using IMGBURN (as suggested as well as obtained from these forums) and I was able to get the confirmation that they worked. Also, on the Wii menu screen, the disks have the GameCube symbol on them when I insert them, if that's what you mean whether they are GCOS disks.

My burner is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D Serial number FFDP056560WL and had used both TDK+R's as well as eventually switched to Verbatim-R's and burned in 2.4x and 4x speeds.

I have read through other forums and people are claiming that their backups are no longer working. Could it be that my situation is similar due to the updates? Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate your time.

Well, then, it looks like the Wii is able to read GCOS discs and not thw Wii ones.

Try this:

1) Download the 1.9g update again (The original, un-padded one)

2) Filechop it yourself and then burn it.

3) Redo the 1.9g update.

It sounds like possible firmware corruption.

PS: Do the same with the Config 1.3 disc.

Let me know.

Where's the party?!?

Can anyone confirm that it is safe to mod your Wii with the WiiKey if you've updated to 3.1U? Thanks

Thanks again for the speedy response... went out and purchased a new external HD so that I could borrow some Wii games from my friends to verify whether it was the ISO files that may have been corrupted.

I did as you suggested and DL'd the unpadded version of 1.9g update as well as the Config 1.3 files and filechopped them myself using your technique. It "bloated" up the iso to 1.5 gigs which I burned seperately at 2.4x speed. I updated the Wiikey and got homer's confirmation. Then I updated the Wiikey (I had NOT used WiiUI to make it a GCOS, because it was already an ISO and I assumed that since I had Homer's confirmation and all, it already IS a GCOS?) which brought me to the Wiikey Configuration screen and proceeded to click Region Override : to ON. I saved the settings (and heard the Wii make some noises) and then clicked on "reset console" to exit the settings.

*NOTE* I wanted to verify that the Wiikey configuration DID save, so I booted the Config 1.3 back up and under Region Override, it had been reset back to "OFF." Is this common to have been reset back to OFF when you load it again?

I did have SOME luck this time, however! I was able to get Wario Ware's Start screen, however I wasn't able to play the game because it gave me a disk error. So there is SOME progression, albeit a small one! Thanks again.

Also, is there any possible way to repay or thank you personally for your time. I know how difficult and how much patience is needed for all this, being a former IT and now a teacher myself, trying to figure out and explain the technicalities! I'd gladly help out.

1) The region override will show OFF even though it's really ON. That is normal.

2) Now... this is what I would do if I was in your shoes:

Erase all game saves and possibly format your Wii (that should bring it back to the original state). My hope is that could solve the problem.

If that does not work, then I would:

A) Make sure that the burner has the latest firmware.
B) Try to burn a new ISO uing a program different from the one used previously Possibly, have a friend burn an image on his or her burner.

C) In the event that still doesn't work, then I would download Update 1.9b, filechop, and run it. Then test some games.
d) If that works, then update to 1.9g. If that does not work, then reset the Wiikey with the 1.9b Recover disc. Then Update the Wiikey amd test some games.

If everything so far has not worked, then that could point to a physical problem with the Wiikey ....

As you can see it's a process of elimination, always starting with less risky things and progressing to more challenging ones.

Let me know how it goes.

Where's the party?!?

One last resort is to change your mod chip.

Sorry for such a long reply... but after borrowing some of my cousin's copies and trying to do some testing/process of elimination, I:

A) Updated the burner firmware
B) Used his burner
C) Filechopped
then
D) Purchased another set of Verbatim-R's

and FINALLY I have it working... it appears that my Wii won't respond to TDK's like his or the previous batch of Verbatim's that I purchased... I guess my Wii is just particularly picky about what type of brands it gets... kinda like me I guess =P

Thanks again SO much Rafa for your help... again if there's anything I can do to show my appreciation... just ask..

I dunno why you dragged this old thread up cos a quick glance at the topic title suggests it's not what your problem is about.

Anyway... If nothing works including originals it suggests there's a problem with the wiikey or the drive lens. At your own risk, you can try cleaning the lens with a DVD lens cleaner - you can buy thenm fairly cheaply. If that doesn't work then you might have to take the wiikey out to check that originals work at least and that would mean the wiikey is dead or possibly just loose. If they don't work then it could mean the lens is damaged.

I have done it with 3.2U.
The problem is no matter what,
default wiikey installation is not recognized any
wii or any burned 1.3, 1.9 firmware or gcos discs...
Only way I could run wiikey setup was using bootdisk.
After boot using bootdisc, switched 1.3 setup disc and
changed wiikey disc speed setting from 6x to 3x and
everything works after reboot and did firmware update
to 1.9s after that.
