I do not know this for sure. I want to pick your brains on this.

I have heard that the Wii was made to where the security is on the Disc and not the console. There is a drive that someone has modified and is selling that will burn the backup games and the Wii will play without a modchip.

I might be completely wrong or just partly. Can someone tell me if you have heard any of this.

when u mod the wii with a modchip - u are actually modifying the dvd drive in the wii. Therefore you do not need to buy a modified drive - just modify the one u already have ....
and i think u meant play the backup games with your drive

to backup an original wii disc u still need to use rawdump or similiar software with a specific LG drive

I know what the mod does. I moded my xbox several years ago. I just heard that this was easier. Just checking.
