Possibly....
There's also the rumor going around that the developers just may be changing website hosts. I don't have the link exactly, but it cam from Maxconsole forums.
there MAY be light at the end of the tunnel - the Wiikey team alaways have a thing about communicating to being with

im doubting their email is the same but has anyone heard anything else or is it all just rumors still. at this point i assume its a long time shut down. maybe someone else will be able to work on the updates from here on out lol.

they announced a while back but their support has moved to wiinewz forums. Any new news updates etc would be posted there.

No, I dont think thats it. Even ignoring the facts that the wiikey site has been down for months, and that the team seems to have moved on to new chips and dosent seem like they're going to be supporting the wiikey anymore with new updates, there remains that they announced that they had to close the site down due to legal troubles and getting DDoS attacked constantly. Wiinews is their offical site now, or will be once it comes back up.

I think its time you check theyr site again.. as theyr up again
and the news is:
[2008-03-26] SSBB Update Released for Wiikey!
We are pleased to be able to announce the release of Firmware Update 1.9s for Wiikey which is available in the resources section. This fixes the issue with original SSBB discs not working and it should also no longer be possible to render the chip inoperable by using patched config discs. A new config option to block system updates from DVD is also supported. The 1.9s config discs will be released by the end of this week.
