Hello everyone...
Just a quick post to let everyone know after updating to firmware v2.10 I just tested a video clip encoded with DivX (using the HD profile) at 1920 x 1080 @ 25fps (Full HD), bitrate of 15,000kbs and worked fine!
This is great news as it means we can now recode captured digital HDTV keeping the full 5.1 dolby digital sound in an avi container with mpeg4 video. The only catch is to make sure you split up the file in 2gb chunks as the PS3 will only recognize 2gb at a time.
If your file is bigger than 2gb it will still play on the PS3 but will stop once it reaches the 2gb point in the file.

Oh yes! I just realised that firmware has been out for over a month. I only just got my PS3. Hahaha!

VirtualDub can easily split avi files into whatever size you like.
I am converting from HDTV captures which in Australia are mpeg2. As far as the technique goes I will simply mention the steps as if I get too in depth, this thread will start to belong on the encoding section.
HD mpeg2--->HD DivX avi
1) Remove ads with avidemux or VideoReDo
2) Frameserve and extract ac3 sound with dgmpgdec
3) Filter with AviSynth (crop, resize etc.)
4) Encode with VirtualDub
5) Mux dolby ac3 and DivX video with VirtualDubMod
There are easier methods and some applications can do all the above with one piece of software. I just prefer to have more control over the process to ensure quality.

NexGen76, there is no way to do this without ANY quality loss. Whenever you re-encode a file (with a lossy codec) it will lose some information.
Some all in one applications include...
- TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress (or v3.0)
- AutoGK
- Even avidemux can be configured to re-encode (although I only use it for ad removal and swapping containers etc.)
There are many more but the only all in one app I use is TMPGEnc 4.0 as it offers a huge filter base, easy cut and edit interface with plenty of output options.
Check your private messages... ;-)
By the way if you do use TMPGEnc 4.0 to encode from a mkv file you need to make sure you have the right codecs installed and then when you open up the file you must allow TMPGEnc to open up "All Files (*.*)". TMPGEnc will use direct show to open up the file.

Not entirely true - if you reheader instead of reencoding theres no quality loss.
Theres a program called mkv2vob that does just that - I got it from here - the creator link.
Download program
http://www.3r1c.eu/mkv2vob/mkv2vob.rar
1. Extract to a directory (dont just run it from within winrar) and run mkv2vob.exe
2. Select the MKV file
3. Select where to save the VOB.
4. Several windows will open/close during the process, do not interrupt it or click anything in these windows.
5. Playback the vob file through tversity, burn to dvd-r, flash drive, etc...
I followed the above - except I ran it from within winrar and every film Ive tried has worked first time. The 720p mkv of transformers looks totally stunning through the PS3.

does the mkv2vob.exe make the files bigger? what if i have a mkv movie that over 6gbs? i'd have to split it first right(losin quality in the process)?

mkv2vob make the files exactly the same size basically.
If streaming them size isnt an issue - however if you want to copy them accross using a usb stick or something then your only restricted by the size of that. The PS3 will play all these files regardless of size - ive streamed an 8gig version of the matrix across and it worked perfectly.
(The 2 gig limit appears to be only on avi files)

Mate, im going to download this program when I get home. So can I burn the vob files on to a normal RW-DVD then?? But if say, the converted vob file is 5gb, how could I split it up and put on to 2 discs??

I downloaded that link Pepp, cheers, but i have tried to do 4 mkv files, 1 was ok, but the other 3 had errors regarding audio codecs not being supported.
Any idea why?

Not sure why they wouldnt work - Ive only recently discovered the program myself and havent had an issue yet (touch wood, cross fingers).
However this is the thread the writer created so may help answer some questions:-

Not investigated it but I believe mkvmerge GUI can split the MKV file then you would use mkv2vob on the split files. Basically you need to split before using mkv2vob.

You select the save location when you use it - it allows you to put the new file where you like.

Theres no way to change where the transcoding temp file is placed no.
Paul - You should have a .vob file - you can either stream it to the ps3, stick it on a usb key, or if it fits on a dvd copy it across as a data file.

MKVmerge GUI... It's part of the MKVtoolnix package (freeware).
