modding my friends 360 ???

My friend recently got a 360 and wants me to mod it to play burned games.I have a few quick questions because i am finding it hard to find what the latest info on modding it is,and i don't want to break his xbox.( I will probably do a firmware mod)

1.my biggest question is: What is the risk of doing this?
2.can he use xbox live once it is modded?
3.What do I need to get to do it(least costly way)?

Clay, did you read any of the stickies here? All the info is there. Don't attempt it man unless you know what you are doing. The risk is that you will break it. He can use it on XBL, but you run a good chance you will get banned eventually. Check the stickies for part 3.

before you atempt it read, read, and read some more. you can screw the 360 up if you do it wrong but if you are prepared it is easy.
read the stickies on the front page and go to 360mods. net and look for textbooks guide.

It has a Benq/LiteOn drive in it (are they easier than the others to mod?)... do I need a on of these things?http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815/124022

or can i just hook it straight to a SATA port inside my PC?or are there any USB adapters that are easyer to access?

you have to have either via or nforce chipset, the via one in your link should do well.

Where does that plug into the computer ? And what can happen if something goes wrong when flaxhing?

All your questions can be answered in the tutorials or in the stickies. Like others have said, research more before you attempt to flash the 360.
