Internet Connection Sharing for Xbox Live question

I am currently awaiting the delivery of a hard disk from my 360. I'm trying to have everything ready for Xbox Live beforehand. I have an Intel PRO/100 VE Network connection on my PC and have hooked up a standard ethernet cable from there into the back of my Xbox.

I have shared the internet connection but my LAN is coming up with a 'Network Cable Unplugged' error.

Is this because I don't yet have a hard disk and can't create a profile so the Xbox isn't using the link yet or do I have something else to worry about?

I've also tried the self-test through the Xbox menus and they fail straight away saying 'Not Connected'

u need a crossover cable from your xbox to your PC

Buy a router, they're dirt cheap now and you'll have the option of adding more devices to your connection later on.

Thanks for the replies.

I was under the impression it didn't matter what type of cable you used for this set up?

If I did buy a router, is it 2 standard ethernet cables I'd need to link that up?

as long s the router was next to your u could just run 2 ethernets cables from it to your xbox and your computer

I use internet connection sharing with my laptop and xbox. I just use a straight cable(you dont have to use crossover with the 360) and change some settings with the IP. It's not that hard. But if you did want to use a router/switch, just use straight cables and it will be a breeze.

Thanks for your help. I'll give it a shot when I get my hard disk but I've got a funny feeling my NIC might be feckered or something along those lines. Cheers again.

Yeah, it might be your NIC or the cable, cuz my 360 is connected with a regular ethernet cable and I turned ICS on and it works fine.
