I have no idea what chip I have, and before I go to the store and buy a Wiikey, I was wondering if I should try a copy of SMG NTSC. Could SMG brick my NTSC Wii?

ok so what i read above, u do not have a modchip installed yet!
put the serial number in here to try and see which chipset your wii is
this way u can see if u have d2c or d2b - this determines WHICH modchip u have to buy
when u say try a copy - do u mean original of smg? if so then as long as ur wii is not modded, only a correct region game will boot up in your wii anyways, a copy will not boot at all and an original which is correct region for your wii will just work
any game which is incorrect region which contains a higher version update on the disc than your modded wii is at, CAN brick your wii

They used to have a place in my local town about 3 years ago but they got shut down. They did repairs ;) , modifications ;) and upgrades ;) but I think they shutdown because of money issues. Their prices were outrageous.
