Howdy folks!

Well, due to the infortunate event that the Universal Unbricker V3 thread made by larrylje was deleted (I hope I wasn't banned from it, since it disappeared too suddenly), I'm making an easier version of his guide. There's actually a way of getting his guide back again on the profiles page, but we can't let down those folks that are first timers and that are looking for a way to fix or mod their PSPs. Please note that the original creator of this here guide was larrylje, an user of this forum, and I ain't trying anything against him. Actually, his guide was very helpful for me and I got very concerned when I saw the thread no more on the forum because many of us were gettin' a lot of information out of his thread and then maybe some other people still wanted to have it, or at least, the chance to copy the guide to a txt file for future reference. So making this guide again, is for me a way to pay back the favor larrylje did to me (and to many people) for writing such so easy-to-understand guide, and most of all, providing a link to get the files that would help many of us fix/mod our PSPs.

Well, let's stop the speech and start workin'. Read this guide carefully AND entirely as it might help you understand some situations that may occur to you and avoid unnecessary questions.

***THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND LARRYLJE'S GUIDE***

The Universal Unbricker V3 (as larry calls it) is nothin' but the Dark_Alex's Despertar Del Cementerio (which in spanish means "waking up from graveyard") and the Open Source Battery Tool V3. Larry also includes on them things a so called "Pandora Installer for 3.xx by Hellcat" software. I don't include it on the guide nor on the zip file because after several tests, I found out that this software is not necessary to use, as the Despertar Del Cementerio does the exact same thing, and works way better. Also, by following larry's guide, you were told to write the msipl.bin file using the "Pandora installer" and caused the psp (the one that is used to prepare the files) being unable to recognize the memory stick, disabling you from continuing with the guide. Many were pissed off because they got stuck on that step, as the problem always happened but on certain custom firmware versions. Basically, "Pandora Installer for 3.xx" is skipped since the Despertar Del Cementerio does the whole thing by itself.

***REQUIREMENTS***

1) A FAT (standard/old/1001 PSP however you call it) that runs version 3.xx custom firmware to prepare the files on. NOTE: A PSP running official firmware won't do the thing.

2) ANY compatible Memory Stick Pro Duo which capacity is between 128 MB and 1GB. 512MB stick is more recommendable, as you need enough space for the files you're going to put to prepare the magic stick and the files the applications will create. Thanks to larrylje for the files, I created a zip file with the necessary files only. The files (as they'll appear on the PSP) are: Despertar Del Cementerio, OS Pandora Battery Tool 0.3 and the 3.71 M33-4 update. Its total size is 70MB, but its worth the try, since I include everything needed. Other guys tell you to get some other files (such as official firmwares and stuff) and you end up losing more time. Sendspace is a free thing, so you click on the link and retry as many times 'til you start the download. Be patient, and it doesn't take that long to let you download.

Link To Files Here

3) PSP Power adaptor and USB cable. This is very necessary.

4) The PSP you will unbrick/mod. Its battery should have at least a 75% of charge. You need this amount of charge to pandorize it correctly.

5) A lot of guts. By following this here guide you are agreeing that anything that you do is purely your responsibility. Remember that no one is pointin' a gun to you to do this thing. Anyway, this procedure is very simple, but if you don't follow this guide as it is, you might screw up somethin'. Also, I'm includin' the spots you might have some problems (which are a few). If you have another Memory Stick that you will not use on this guide, please store it away, you'll be held responsible for any data loss.

***PREPARING MEMORY STICK***

Using the homebrew-capable PSP do the following.

NOTE: Backup any important data currently stored on the stick before proceeding!

1) Format the Memory Stick using the PSP utility. PSP Menu > Settings > System Settings > Format Memory Stick.

2) Plug USB cable and enable usb on PSP. Extract the files and paste all on the Memory Stick root. You will be prompted for file overwrite, OK to all in there. Disable USB once the file transfer is done.

3) Back on the PSP menu, go to GAME > Memory Stick > Despertar del Cementerio. You get the following:

Press cross to begin the installation.

3.a) Press X, cousin.

Then you see this:

Extracting 2.71 updater modules... OK
Building IPL... Ok
Extracting 1.50 kernel subset... ok
Extracting 3.40 kernel subset... ok
writing.... (this appears several times downwards)
Copying Registry... OK
Done
Autoexiting in 7 seconds.

3.b) After that, you'll be back on PSP menu. You now have a Magic Memory Stick.

*** PREPARING BATTERY***

Doing this requires you to completely follow the guide, or you will leave your battery pandorized forever. NOTE: If you tried to mod the battery being used before and something went wrong, you might get error messages. If so, use another battery.

1) On PSP menu, go to GAME > MEMORY STICK > OS PANDORA BATTERY TOOL 0.3.

2) On the main screen, you will be prompted to press X to continue or O to quit. Press X, what were you thinking?

3) You will be presented with the following options, the last 2 are disabled because no eeprom.bin file is present on the stick yet.

- Quit now
- Convert to service mode
- convet to autoboot mode
- backup battery eeprom to ms0:/eeprom.bin
- flash only serial from ms0:/eeprom.bin
- flash full EEPROM from ms0:/eeprom.bin

4) FIRST OF ALL: backup your battery eeprom (press x at 4th option) unless you don't want to convert you battery back to normal. You will get the following:

reading battery data... (takes about 5 secs)
Opening file ms0:/eeprom.bin
Writing dump to file
Done! Press x to continue.

NOTE: At the point of "opening" and "writing", Memory Stick LED will flash. If not, try again or use another battery.
4.a) Press X, cousin

5) The screen is back to the 6 same options and now press X at Convert to service mode. You get:

Converting to service mode (0xFFFFFFFF)

WRITING 0xFFFFFFFF
verify: 0xFFFFFFFF Success!

Done! Press X to continue.

6) Your battery is now a Pandora battery. You're ready to unbrick/mod a PSP. OPTIONAL: Reenable the USB connection and store the eeprom.bin file on your computer, just in case.

***INSTALLATION***

The Pandora battery works and fits perfectly on a PSP slim, which means the procedure is PSP-Slim friendly. However, try not to force it in place, as you might apply too much force to pop it out, damaging the PSP.

1) Remove all cables and UMD from the PSP to be fixed/modded. Make sure WLAN switch is on.

2) Place memory stick first and then the Pandora battery and the battery cover as well. Reversing the procedure will not make you able to start the installation.

3) Switch on the PSP. Memory Stick and WLAN leds will flash shortly and then you will be prompted for the following:

Press O to install 3.71 Official Firmware.
Press X to install 3.71 custom firmware.

Press the option that you like. You will see a lot of lines saying "Flashing file" and a lot of stuff such as a command prompt on a PC.

4) At the very end of the process, you get:

Press X to shutdown PSP.

So, press X.

5) Remove pandora's batt and plug AC adaptor. Switch on the PSP, what are you waiting cousin? Bricked PSP should turn on, leaving you with the mouth open and your hands cold and sweaty because you don't believe you fixed your PSP on your own. Modded PSP will boot as well. If you installed official firmware on this PSP, turn it completely off and follow the next step on the homebrew capable PSP. Modded PSPs continue below (you can now run homebrew, you don't need the other PSP)

***UN-PANDORIZE BATTERY***

Hoping that you backed up the eeprom.bin file to the stick, do as follows. No eeprom.bin file, no un-pandorizable battery, capische? Before proceeding, you MUST turn on the PSP (in which you will run the battery creator) with the ac adaptor first. NOTE: Skipping step 3 won't do any bad, but is best if performed.

1) Instert the pandora battery (power led goes orange) and go to GAME > Memory Stick > OS Pandora Battery Tool 0.3

2) Press X at the main screen.

3) Press X at the 6th option "Flash FULL eeprom from ms0:/eeprom.bin.
You will get:

writing
0x14
Writing errors occurred!
Done! Press X to continue.

4) After pressing X, now choose the 5th option "Flash Only serial from ms0:/eeprom.bin. You will get:

writing 0x12345678
verify: 0x12345678 Success!
Done! Press X to continue.

5) Press X to clear screen and finally choose "quit now".

6) Wait for PSP menu to come up and turn it off.

7) Once off, put the battery on its original PSP (if you installed official firmware) or, disconnect AC adaptor, take out battery, put it back and turn on the PSP. Magic stick should still be on the PSP that you unbricked/modded in order to prove the battery was normalized successfully.

8) Turn on the unbricked/modded PSP and see if it boots up. If not, repeat the steps to un-pandorize battery. If doing so doesn't help out, either you didn't backup your eeprom or the battery got damaged (very unlikely). In that case, use another battery.

Well, if all went right, you're now an expert unbrickin or moddin' PSPs. Unbrickin can be very satisfying if you help a crying kid for his dead PSP, or moddin' can be very useful for a constantly-asking-for-new-games kid, since you can put some NES and /or SNES ROMs using the right emulator.

The emulators that work best for this thing are: SNES9xTYL 0.4.2 for SNES and NesterJ 1.11. ROMs to be used are the same ones you typically download from the Internet.

Run 3.71 M33-4 update as optional thing. Adds only a few non-critical updates, but it's alright to keep your PSP up to date.

The only reason the previous guide was deleted was due to the method that was being used.

Some users where having issues with their Memory Sticks not being read after using the guide. There Memory Sticks couldn't be recovered back to normal either so I thought it was best to take it down.

I have recently made new guides using easy installers for making the Universal Unbrciker V3 + Pandora Battery.

You can find them stickied at the top of this forum.

Okay, i'm freaking out here and was wondering if you could help me out.

I started with a 3.71 OFW Fat PSP and downgraded to 1.50. Successfully made the pandora battery/memory stick using this guide. I got to this point --

Quote:
3) Switch on the PSP. Memory Stick and WLAN leds will flash shortly and then you will be prompted for the following:

Press O to install 3.71 Official Firmware.
Press X to install 3.71 custom firmware.
The light on my slim turned green however the wlan orange light did not flash. I tried the screen brightness but it didnt do anything. Afterwards I tried putting the fat battery back into the fat psp with and without the Magic Memory stick and it wouldn't start up. I thought I was on the road to success and this just totally blew me. If you could let me know what I did/am doing wrong it would be very appreciated.

If you downgraded to 1.50 why didnt you use the direct V3 of pandora magic stick the one that loads up to 3.71m33-2?

Good guide and good point larrylj, I always end up refering people to your guide as I find it one of the bests.

PSP (+[__]%): 2.80 < 1.50 > 3.40OE-A > 3.71M33-4 > 3.80m33-5 > 3.90m33-3 > 4.01m33-2 + 8gb MSPD
PS3 HD 60GB: 1.33 > 1.90 > 2.01 > 2.17 - NO OS
Nintendo DS [+[__]%]: EZ Flash 5 Plus + 1GB MicroSD + EZFlash 3in1
Nintendo Wii: 3.2U + 1GB SD Card + WiiKey 1.9s

There are so many guides out there and I understood the just of what needed to be done in order to get a slim to custom firmware and followed this one as it was easy to understand. There's a lot to wrap your head around and I spent a solid month researching as best I could before I did anything. I dont know what direct upgrade your reffering to, if I did I probobly woulldnt be having this problem :D. Is there a way to go back and use whatever you are talking about?

I just read over this guide and have found the reason you are having these issues. It is nothing you did wrong. The guide itself is wrong.

First off the Memory Stick needs to be logically formated and this guide does not walk you through those steps. Plus an IPL needs to be installed which no IPL has even been installed not even the msipl.bin that was created by Despertar Cementerio 3.

I would suggest going to this guide HERE and follow it to make a proper Magic Memory Stick (The easy installer will format and install msipl automatically for you).

Make sure you save the battery eeprom.bin to the PC before re-doing the Magic Memory Stick. You need that to convert your battery back to normal. After you have finished installing the custom firmware and you want to convert the battery back to normal drag the eeprom.bin from your PC back to the root of the PSP Memory Stick.

When running the easy installer on the other guide boot your PSP up via AC Adapter then place the Pandora Battery into the PSP before running the easy installer. This way your PSP will boot normal and not into service mode via the Pandora Battery.

Thanks so much for the reply, I only have one question. What do I do about the pandora battery I already have? My fat psp won't start up with it. Should I go buy a new one and start over? Thanks again for your help

What do you mean it won't start up with your FAT?

Did you back up the Battery eeprom like the guide above said?

Listen carefully.

Start your PSP via AC Adapter only, without the Pandora Battery in it.

Now enable the USB connection between the PSP and PC and drag the eeprom.bin from your PSP to PC for safe keeping.

Now go to the provided guide I linked to above and create the Universal Unbricker V3 Magic Memory Stick.

After you have created the Magic memory Stick turn off the PSP and unplug it from the AC Adapter.

Now place the Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick into the PSP you want to install 3.71 M33-2 to.

After you are finished installing the custom firmware to the PSP's you can now convert the Battery back to normal.

Take out the Pandora Battery then plug the PSP back into the AC Adapter and turn on the PSP. After it boots up place the Pandora Battery into the PSP.

Now enable the USB and drag the eeprom.bin back to the root of the Memory Stick on the PSP. Then run the OS Pandora Battery Tool and choose "write serial only from ms0:/eeprom.bin"

After it has flashed the serial back to your Battery turn off the PSP then unplug and take out the Battery from the PSP. Now place the Battery back in the PSP and it can be used as normal now.

Fix the guide - see larrylje's post below. We have several here that are tried and true - no need to confuse members.
Title edited - looks like your referencing larrylje's guide but are not - so that just confuses even more.

This is really frustrating and now im confused..

I followed the guide in the link you sent me and successfully created the magic stick.

THEN

I copied the eeprom.bin file I saved from the first time I converted the battery using this thread to my memory stick (because you said it was wrong so I was going to convert the back to its original state and remake the pandoras battery using the linked thread you gave me). It said I successfully restored the battery so I continued with the guide you sent me to create pandoras battery. I have CFW 3.51 on my FAT so I used this guide:

Quote:
PANDORA GUIDE: THOSE THAT HAVE CUSTOM FIRMWARE PSP

Go to Game Menu Memory Stick and run OS Pandora Battery Tool. Press X at warning screen to get to Main Menu.

Select "backup battery eeprom to ms0:/eeprom.bin"

After the eeprom is backed up go to "convert to service mode"

Go to Quiet Now after the Battery has been converted and it will exit to XMB.

Turn off the PSP and take out the Battery then re-insert the Battery back in the PSP and the Universal Unbricker Menu should come up. press X to install 3.71 M33 to the PSP.
When I attempted to reinsert the battery, the psp would not turn on. It would only turn on if I took out both the battery and the memory stick.

All I want is custom firmware on my slim, is there an easier way to go about doing this? I don't mind spending the money to get another battery and start from scratch if thats neccisary... sorry about all of the issues but I really appreciate the help

You didn't need to recover the battery to normal. That is why I gave you directions on how to create the Magic Memory Stick using the AC Adapter only.

What happens when you place the battery into the PSP? does the green LED light come on?

If not start the PSP again using the AC Adapter and run the OS Battery Tool again and convert the battery again to a Pandora Battery. Then try using it with the Magic memory Stick.

Sorry I misunderstood..i turned it on using the AC adapter then placed the battery then the momory stick to run pandoras battery tool and the light turned green. It says that my battery is in service mode...

After for the step where you are to take the battery out and put it back in, the LED is still green but nothing shows up on the screen and the psp doesnt boot.

Have you instlled the custom firmware to the PSP yet?

If you havent use the Pandora battery and Magic memory Stick to do so.

After you are done doing that follow the below steps to convert the Battery back to normal...

Drag the eeprom.bin back to the root of the Memory Stick on the PSP. Then run the OS Pandora Battery Tool and choose "write serial only from ms0:/eeprom.bin" After it has flashed the serial back to your Battery turn off the PSP then unplug and take out the Battery from the PSP. Now place the Battery back in the PSP and it can be used as normal now.

sorry to y'all larrylje and everyone if this guide is wrong. Maybe I didn't add some details that may confuse many folks around here, I just wrote what I exactly do when I do this thing as it works. Additional steps about the IPL and all that stuff larrylje mentions are not here because even if I don't do it, the method works.

Newbiw guy: if the screen is black, is the magic memory stick on? If you only install the battery, you would get a black screen. If you use an old version of despertar del cementerio, you might get a blank screen, and you will have to make a blind install, which means, that you need to do the thing imagining that you're seeing what is been told on the guide. Anyway, i will let larrylje help you out, because it seems that you've messed up everything buddy. At least my guide says to follow it as it is to avoid problems.

Hey moderator, I wanted to create a very simple enough guide, but you're right, I'ma do another guide pretty much different, not regarding pandora, but regarding to PSP. So once larrylje gets done with the newbie, I'd like to thank you if you could close this thread, or tell me how to close it. I don't wanna mess up here, ok?

They are needed and you must be doing them to get it to work.

I have tried this guide myself and I get the same results as m2b did.

This is due to the Magic Memory Stick not being created properly without the steps that I have mentioned above.
