My computer thinks that my lite-on DVD burner is a CD burner. I have tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting. The PC tells me that it has found new hardware - a CD drive and uses the same driver.
I built the PC and used a drive that was working fine in my old PC. It could be that I've done something wrong - but it doesn't look like it - it all seems in the right place as far as I can tell.
I can burn CDs on it but not video DVDs.
Any ideas?

I have had this happen to me on 2 different occasions with 2 different drives. One time I switched the drive to a different PC and had this problem and updating the firmware for the drive solved the problem. Other time it suddenly started to show as only a cd drive when it previously was working fine, ended up having to replace the dvd burner.
When I put a DVD in it opens up the CD write menu. Nero will not let me burn video DVDs, it doesn't give me the option. There are 4 drivers listed in the properties - the first is cdrom.sys in the windows driver folder. The only disk I got with the ASUS MB doesn't have these drivers on it, only video, sound etc.
I have to admit my ignorance - I don't know what an ASPI layer is - I'll google it now and take a look.

Installation Instruction:
This file extracts by default to the c:\adaptec\aspi directory.
If you have changed this directory, please note the directory you have chosen.
For Windows 98, NT 4.0, Me and 2000, use the enclosed ASPIINST.EXE file to install the ASPI layer.
For Windows XP, select Start - Run from the menu, and then the Browse button.
Locate the INSTALL.BAT file in the directory the files extracted to and select the OPEN button.
In the command box, add a space and either XP32 for Pentium I/II/III/IV processors or XP64 for Itanium processors.
The command should look like: c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP32 or c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP64.
Then select the OK button to run the XP installer.
ok now you really need to explain to me in as much deatil from start your project to end project excatly what your doing writing here every single tiny step so i can fully understand your problem.

to note alot of drives in my computer look like cdrom after a disc is installed (not a worry)
PS= you need those drivers for ide installed! i have built many ASUS mobo's to date and it should be on discs some hardware files dont always load with an installer! you go to drive and install from there as disc contains files only (drivers)
easeist way go to asus site and get the drivers there new updated one and install (a must do step)!
