Can you update Wii before/after D2Ckey mod?

Can Wii console be updated (either before or after) on line if you're planning to add a mod chip?

The reason I'm asking is that I accidentally updated a new Wii to the latest (I guess it's firmware) online, and I'm afraid the D2ckey may not work now if I install it.
