I mean someone is going to hack it sooner or later and you don't need it for any of the new games or anything

every new release comes with something extra. Check the release notes. it's just the more the PSP can do, the more sales of it itself. I know when i was at crap-mart people were buying them up just for remote-play with their PS3.

Every update Sony comes out with is made to make it harder to hack/ mod and it also includes more features (.pft themes, etc) to lure people off CFWs. So Sony is basically taking shots in the dark and hoping that they can make a firmware that would be unhackable which isn't going to happen when people like Dark Alex and The M33 team on the PSP scene
