First, I must start out saying that I am not a professional computer tech. I just enjoy watching and backup movies. Recently, I tried to backup a new release from Hollywood using DVDShrink. The movies got stuck at a file, and the laser wouldn't move at it. I tried to close the software, it didn't let me do it. So after a couple of minutes, I had to manually turn off the computer.
After I turned the computer back on, the 18X DVD-RW rom could only write at 0.8X. I knew that I was f__ked and my DVD-RW rom was damaged. I then replaced the damaged rom with a new identical 18X DVD-RW rom. After I installed it, I tried to use the new rom but discovered again that it could only burn at 0.8x speed.
I was very upset beyond words. How could that be possible? For the next two hours, I tried different movies, different softwares, deleting the new rom manually from DEVICE MANAGER and reinstalled it, etc., the new rom responded the same way: 0.8X write speed. At that point, my intuition told me that the new-released movie that damaged my old rom earlier must have left an permanent instruction to my computer to make DRIVE E (DVD-Rom) to burn at 0.8X speed from then on.
To resolve the problem, I finally resorted to restore my computer to an earlier times. I used "SYSTEM RESTORE" in Windows' "ACCESORIES" program. And thank god, it worked, now my new DVD-RW is writing at a normal healthy speed now. Would any puter wiz explained to me why this latest anti-guard thing can be so potent and damaging?
Possibly the burner was not damaged - the IDE controller had been set back from 'DMA' to "PIO', i.e. from fastest to slowest speed.
DVD Shrink has not been updated for years and has problems with newer DVD encryption schemes.
As the errors pile up while it tries to decrypt the disk, Windows sets the speed back in an attempt to compensate.
If this happens, instead of uninstalling the drive, uninstall the controller and reboot.
The drivers are reinstalled and DMA is reset.
Rip with 'DVDFab HD Decrypter' and save DVD Shrink for compressing the files.

you had the right idea uninstall the ide controller and reboot, but yes it doesnt always work, so a registry edit needs to be performed, you got over that with a restore piont, which in affect is the same thing sort of.
the software used crashed your pc not being upto date, get latest rippers etc...
and errors on drives makes the drive go to pio mode [slow but works]
