All, I am new to the whole backup and iso creating for PS2 games. I feel that I am pretty computer literate, but don't quite understand what the procedure to create an iso image of a ps2 game.

Here is a little background on my scenario. My son has a PS2 and is accumulating a nice library of games. I have been reading several forums over the past months trying to decide what to do to implement a system for him to be able to play "backups" of the games we own. So I finally broke down and bought USBExtreme even though most of the threads I read said that many games would probably not work.

I received it yesterday and formatted my USB Seagate 250GB external hd and tried installing NASCAR07 on it. I then hooked up the hd to the PS2 with the USBExtreme disc in. When I tried to run the game it just showed a blank screen.

I then started doing some research on that topic and came up with the following post from afterdawn's forum: 348187. This looked like a pretty promising post referring to the DNAS files. I have got to the point where I am ready to use the app CDVDGEN and I am unclear on how to use it.

I have the app loaded on my pc, but that is as far I have got. I did find another url that discusses the software, but I am still confused.

Can someone please help me understand the process of creating the iso image for the games so I can then install them on the USB external hd with the dos version of USBExtreme install utility?

Sorry for writing a long thread, but figure it might give someone a better understanding of my position.

I appreciate any help anyone could give.

Thanks in advance,

I have read many threads on the forum and still unsure of the procedure needed to follow.

Can someone please help me!

Hey there, I think I can help you out. I just got USBExtreme and I know how to use the DOS utility.

I am not sure what the game compatibility is like with your particular game, but its worth a shot.

http://www.hdadvance.com/usb_extreme_how-to-use.htm

That should help you out.

If you want to make an iso of your game, use DVD decrypter. Go to mode -> iso read, and that should do it. I can write up a tutorial on my blog later if needed.

rdn98 - Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delay in replying back to you. I typed a reply the other day and accidentally closed out my browser.

Have you had any success and playing newer games with USBExtreme? Once I got software a couple of weeks ago I tried with no success so I started reading numerous threads on this and other websites and some of them lead me to the DNAS protection issue. I found the following thread on this site to helpful.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/348187

However; I got the part where you have create an iso of some of the files I just can't figure it out.

Have you reviewed this thread before, if so did it make sense to you? If not, could you and see what you think?

I am sure once I do it one time I will be able to for now on, but it is the first time that sometimes get you.

I look forward to the assistance from you and anyone else.

Have a good day!

Thanks,

I have followed bryce v's tutorial many a time, and once you do it a few times it is not hard to follow.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/348187#2100927
You will need CD/DVD ROM Generator Version 1.5 and CDVDGEN_ISOBuilder_by_JRLS or you can use IML/ISO
Many a backup does not require this at all either.
Check the compatibility site first to see what has worked for others.

The site is down at the moment but should be back up again soon.

I am alright with renaming the img file, but the part I don't understand is using CDVDGen and from there forward.

Now I was successful in getting NASCAR 07 working on the usb hd over the weekend, just by renaming the dnas300.img from an existing ioprp300.img on the Sony disc that came with the unit. Once I renamed it I made a dvd of the disc (from the files I copied over to my internal hd) and then used the dos utility from USBExtreme to transfer it to the usb hd. It then loaded fine on the p2.

However; when I tried to do NASCAR 08 it would not work. So I then started searching on the forums again and ran into some threads that reference patching the dnas file, but again not sure what exactly to do there either.

Any thoughts on how to proceed? Again, the part that confuses me on the guides listed above is creating the iso file, I just don't get what cdvdgen guide, because what does this have to do with putting it on the usb hd to run with USBExtreme. It appears this is for use with backups of the game using swap magic, correct?

Are you using USBExtreme or USBAdvance? Since I have USBExtreme I already have the boot disc so I am not trying to play backups of the games per say.

I appreciate all your help and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Ok they might have patched with the ADR Patcher using the EA boot fix.
Not sure.

An easier way to rebuild the ISO after you have done a DNAS or IOPRP swap, is just to use Nero as long as no single file is over 2GB.
Just open up Nero, choose DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO), then browse to your folder where your game is, choose select all, then copy to compilation. Nero will put them in the right order when it burns it.

CDDVDGEN is not real hard to use. Basically you need to know the order of our backup files on DVD, that is why you need ISObuster to show you the order. And basically follow that tutorial to a "T"

Then use CDDVD_Generator_by_JRLS to import the files it made and build your ISO.

I have the retail UsbExtreme, and I also use the usbadvance.elf and run it with swap magic or my memor32 card.
The only difference of the 2 is usbadvance is the cracked version of UsbExtreme to run with a mod of some sort.

Do you know much about the patching of DNAS files where you have to use the 5 sets of 2 digit alphanumeric values? Afterdawn forum link below:

Is this important if you are trying to use a "backup" game and access online gaming or do you think it will solve my problem of getting NASCAR 08 to work on the usb hd?

Also, where do you go to get the associated IOPRPxxx.img files for the corresponding DNASxxx.img file? Do you just search your existing PS2 games for the ioprp file and copy and rename it to the DNASxxx.img file? Or do you know a place on the web that has the ioprp files for download? Also, is there anything specific file size or date that is important?

I have found from the couple of games I have tried so far that the games have both a IOPRPxxx.img and DNASxxx.img (of the same xxx) on the disc. Why can't you copy the IOPRPxxx.img from the disc and rename it DNASxxx.img? As stated before I did not use IOPRPxxx.img from the same game, but was curious if you could or not.

Again, I appreciate all your help and support while trying to help me figure this out.

Have a good day!

Thanks,

Yes this is important for online gaming only. It will make no difference that I know of for USB Hdd.

Yes you can go here for IOPRP's.
And there are some in this file also. You need to extract it and look for the tools folder.

Yes I have done that in the past when I couldnt find any DNAS files.Just put in the IOPRP and change it to DNAS.

Thanks for response again. That was a big help. One more question if there are multiple IOPRP files with the same name; how do you know which one to use for a particular game?

Thanks,

Your welcome. Thats where it can sometimes take awhile, and a bit of testing. I usually just start with one, the same size, and try it. If it works great, if not move on too the next. There are times also when booting a backup on the USB that it may take a few moments the first time so have patience.

In bryce_v_s instructions is it necessary to do steps 5, 6, and 7? Or once I rename the files can I just use Roxio and copy the files to a new DVD?

Here are the steps I believe I need to do:

1) Copy game to location on internal hd
2) Search for dnas files.
3) Rename DNAS files from existing IOPRP files that are close in file size.
4) Use Roxio or some other "burning" software app, copy the files into the app and make the dvd.
5) Use USBExtreme DOS utility to transfer game to external hd.

Is this correct for USBExtreme? If not what steps am I not doing.

I am actually working on this right now. I still have not had any luck with NASCAR 08, I am moving on to another game.

I look forward to hearing from you or anyone else that might be able to shed some light.

Thanks in advance,

Sounds like your on the right path. I have not used Roxio in years so am not sure if it has the same option as Nero to choose DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO), because in PS2 backups it's imperative you choose that option for it too work right.
So if Roxio has that option then I would say yes go ahead and burn with it.

Just an update. Things have been going much better over the past weekend with the process. I have finished with all the games I own. I have been successful with all but 5 games. They are listed below:

1. Star Wars Battlefront II DNAS300.img 276k 8/13/2005 1:21 AM
2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix no dnas file
3. Star Wars Battlefront DNAS280.img 267k 8/1/2004 11:56 AM
4. WWE SmackDown vs Raw 2007 DNAS300.img 273k 5/10/2006 11:32 PM
5. NASCAR 08 DNAS300.img 276k 5/3/2007 3:59 AM &
DNAS300.img 273k 10/11/2006 1:45 AM

I have checked all my of IOPRP files and none of them match the file size. I have tried multiple ones with close file sizes, but with noavail.

Do you have any suggestions?

I am also tempted to post this in a new thread and see if anyone else has any thoughts.

I really sincerely appreciate all your help so far.

Take care,
