Most likely: heat, mobo warping, bad design, and crap solder.

Basically, heat has caused the motherboard to warp under the GPU and possibly the CPU which the poor design of the x-clamps helped it to happen. The crap solder has seperated from it's crucial contact points from gpu and/or cpu.

Then there's the crap thermal paste that M$ uses and the crude way it is applied between the gpu/cpu heatsinks. When that stuff "burns" off due to the heat, that can cause the 3rod as well.

So, as you can see, there are many reasons it can fail.
