well wifi connections will be slow depending on your internet connection speed and way you go . if it is going slow i suggest a wired connection
in the case of backing up all you need to do is plug a flash drive in and go to system settings and find backup restore. or if you have the 80 giger just plug a mem card in and back it up to that.:)

Wi-Fi wont go slow depending on the internet connection speed,it will go the same speed as a wired connection.Your Wi-Fi will go slower the further you get away from the source.

If your intrernet speed is 4mbs you will get the same speed on both Wi-Fi(90-100% quality) and Ethernet

it dose get slower the further you go from it but why dont you throw a 10 foot cat 5 at 10 feet and a wifi enabled pc next to each other and do a test.

This has still nothing to do with internet speed.
You can have two Wi-Fi enabled devices comunicating without the internet, for example PS3 and PSP or PS3 and PC.

speaking of downloading i understand he could dl stuff from wifi between a pc to the ps3 over a media server or something.. but still.

I was refering to your comments.I was explaining that just because you have slow internet speeds that it dosnt make Wi-Fi any slower than Ethernet. If he has his Wi-Fi router near his PS3 he will have the same speed using a wired connection.Im also just commenting on my experience,my router is in the same area as my PS3 and PC,i dont get any difference in speed in downloading from PSN or doing updates whether i use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The only difference that would be noticed is transfering data from a PC to PS3 as Ethernet would be faster the reason for this is the data rate between a PC and PC/PS3 is 54mbs with Wi-Fi and 100mbs with Ethernet.
