I had my NTSC Wii modded with a d2ckey and I tried to play burned games. I played two games without any problems at all. Then, I tried to play SMG (I'm not sure if it was NTSC or PAL version). Anyway, it immediately started downloading an update (I did not have a choice NOT to install). When I saw this, I immediately stopped the download and since then, NO backup games work! Please help!

I have been trying to read through all of the treads to figure this out, and I have tried so many things over the past 2 weeks that I really need help.

what firmware version did you have before accidental update? Do you still have SMG image saved that you used to make SMG disk from? If yes then you can check what region it is with WIU.
