Currently the only way to do this,(I believe) is by using a hotswap method with your p.c. This means you'll need to have a dvd burner capable of reading dual layer discs and an xbox 360 game with a high TOC (which just means a game that is really big) and you'll have to open the dvd drive and and swap them without ejecting discs. I'm pretty sure the program you need to do this is called wxripper however i do not have a link to it. It is a pretty complicated process to back up your own 360 discs.

go on ebay and look for a TSST corp DVD-ROM SH-D162C with Keron 1.0 or higher. this is an internal drive that can be easily installed into your desktop. they usually go for around $65 but its a small price to pay to keep your originals in tact. from here you can use XBOX backup creater (there are other programs that people would argue are better, but this is what i use) and make a copy of the game. with this dvd drive you can read a 360 game and put the image on your hard drive. i recommend using imgburn to put that image onto a dual/double layered disc. and make sure to use verbatim disks... i used memorex forever and i ended up having to get a new laser and drive installed into my xbox because the cheap media ruined my laser. its not a good thing, trust me.

sorry about the double posts mr. moderator but there is one more thing i should add about the question... you need to have your 360 modded to be able to play backups of your originals.

Is the TSST corp SH-D162C a reader/writer or do I need a seperate DL burner?

What other software would I need.

Thanks
The D162C drive is for ripping the game. It is not a burner.

You'll need your DL burner to burn the game.

So yes, two seperate drives.

as far as i know there are no DL discs in -R format. at least the ones i use are the verbatim +R and they work great. yes the TSST drive is for reading only. by the way... verbatim is the best discs to use. memorex and other brands work but when i used memorex for a few months my xbox laser went bad and i had to replace the whole dvd drive.

ive got my system soft modded, which means its modded with a firmware update so to speak. there is no soldering of a chip. and unless i am mistaken you must have your 360 modded in some way... unless something cool happened over the past couple of months that i didnt hear about.

just search www.craigslist.com and see if there is someone in your area who is willing to do it for you. i got my modded for like $80 which is well worth it when i dont have to worry about getting my $60 a piece originals messed up.

no problem man, and if you can, try and see if they can save your warranty. i read on here somewhere that you can safely remove the warranty sticker with a hot gun and razor blade, stick it to a piece of wax paper, then put it back on the xbox where it belongs when the mod is done. if your xbox goes bad then you can send it back to M$ and get it fixed. now i only heard this little trick worked, i've never actually seen it for myself... but its worth asking the guy/girl modding your xbox about.
