Does the same game from different regions have the same update?
I have a Japanese wii and play mostly USA games.
I have not tried the latest games with the new updates yet (ie SMG, MP3).
Does anybody know if the same game, from different regions, has the same update. If I update from the Japanese version of a game will the US version still need to update?
Unfortunately different regions have different updates. Although they thy may have the same version numbers (3.0, 3.1, etc) they are also followed by a letter indicating the region; 'e' for europe, 'u' for usa, and 'j' for japan.
You should NOT use a game to update your Wii if the game is from a different region to your console; you have a Jap Wii so you should not use a usa or european game to update it. You risk 'bricking' your console doing so.
If you have the ISO of the game, you can use a piece of software called Wiibrickblocker to alter the image so that it will not run the update; however this is not guaranteed to work.

Thanks for the reply but you didn't answer my question.
I know not to update from games not from the same region as my wii.
What I want to know is, if I use the Japanese version of a game to update the wii, will the US version of the same game still want to run the same update?
ie. If I use the Jap version of SMG to update the wii will the US version of SMG still require to update?
When you insert the game disc it will still ask you to update. After you click OK it will compare your current firmware with the update on the game disc. Although it may be the same version number - 3.1 - because it is from a different region it may continue to install the update from the disc. This may result in a semi-brick situation, i.e. you can boot original games but backups may not boot and you may not be able to access the Wii settings. It may also duplicate some Wii channels.
