Hi,

Just joined afterdawn as i'm having trouble upgrading my ps3 hdd to the wd scorpio 320gb hdd.

Ive backed up all data on an external hard drive, changed the ps3 hard drive but when i start up the ps3 the following message appears -

"Connect the controller using a USB cable and press the PS button.
The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to restart the system.
If the system cannopt be resterted the system partition of the hard drive must be reformatted and you must reinstall the sytem software. Insert storage media that contains update storage data of 2.35 or later then press the Start and Select buttons at the same time.
For info on how to obtain update data refer to SCE website for your region."

If i press the ps3 button it rolls back to the same screen message as above. If i press the start and select buttons it checks for the data but cannot find it. I havent removed the external usb.

On putting the seagate hdd back in it boots up first time.

I've downloaded the 2.35 update to my external hdd and to the wd scorpio but it still comes up with the screen above.

Help me please!!!!

You need to make a folder on the root of the external HDD and name it PS3; then make a folder inside PS3 called UPDATE; then but the 2.35 eboot in there. Yes the folder's names must be in caps.

Also there is a common discrepancy about if the internal HDD uses FAT32 or not; it doesn't it uses its own unique file system. It only reads external memory devices if they have FAT32. So your scorpio will need to be formatted by the PS3 itself.

with the new scorpio black (7200rpm) coming out soon, is the extra 1800rpm worth it over the original 5400rpm scorpio? i'm already planning ahead with the hdd swap before i get a ps3.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

There have been rumors of overheating issues with using higher rpm drives but it hasn't been confirmed. The higher rpm will definitely make a difference how much of a difference remains to be seen. If your really looking for high performance get a solid state drive.

If you look around you can see some speed test to see if it's really worth it. It will produce more heat and thus noise.

I am personally waiting for the 500gig from Samsung or someone else who can make it more affordable. My 250gig is just about full and the only game I have is MGS4. My movie collection is stored on the HD in 720p. I'm actually hoping that with a firmware update that the PS3 will start reading NTFS so I can connect an external monster of a drive with all my video.

It would also help if the 360 used the same HD video codec?s as the PS3. Mainly VOB.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem as Calexum except that my ps3 needs version 2.36 or later and i have had no success with the method suggested above.

I put the file on a stick drive with a "PS3" folder on the top and a subfolder "UPDATE"within it.
Whenever i tell the PS3 to look is says no relevent file found.

Is there something special that i have to do to my stick drive beforehand?
Also this is where i have gotten the file http://au.playstation.com/support/ps3/faqs/ps3_update_tscs.jhtml
Is this the right file?

Does anyone have any suggestions
