Do you have a router. The easy way for me was just to connect my ps2 to the router with long cable, and use the network access disk. I chose DHCP automatically and it saved my settings.
Tutorial is here for online.

There are other tutorials as well there for playing backups online etc.

There is no way that I know of for it to read your usb drive through the PS2. Only way is to keep unplugging and taking it to your PC. Its not that bad is it, lol. Unless you switch games an awful lot.

The PS2 slim already has a built in network port on the back and you will need a RJ-45 CAT5 cable to connect to your router.

Yes I can remember when I had 50-100ft cables running through the house. I now have a wireless router, plus use a cable just for the PS2. I have to run it down the hall, lol.
But read this thread, specifically #4 about wireless setup for PS2.
