Thanks to the great people on After dawn. I learned that Sony DL DVD's are cheap 3rd grade media. Which is why I got "Unplayable Disc" and wasted 25 dollars !

Sony makes 3rd Grade Media. Not meant for 360 !

If you're getting "Unplayable Disc" error. CHECK YOUR MEDIA !

1.Put disc in drive.
2.Open up "ImgBurn"
3.Click Change Automatic Write Speed
4.Under Disc
5. Search name & Grade

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

This just gives me more fuel to my fan boy flame.

Thanks for the link.
I have tried 3 other brands as an alternative to verbatims and have had limited and no luck.
Ritek arita discs, have had eight packs of these, burned well except one pack of coasters.
Datawrite Titanium , read a positive comment about these, thought id give them a try, had one successful burn out of about twenty.
I have just bought some discs by Ricoh called mirror, yet to try these.

100% with verbs though.

While I know Sony is 3rd grade media, that is all they sell in my small town.

3 xbox 360's (2 benq's 1 hitachi 47dj), no coasters and zero problems on all 3 360's using these 3rd grade Sony's.

The 8x Ricoh DL discs are hit and miss for the 360. First 10 disc spindle I would say 8 of them worked fine. Recent spindles have been crap with less than half working, getting read errors constantly after reaching a certain point in the game. Burned using Pio 212 or Sammy 203B at various speeds 4-8x..doesnt seem to matter proving disc quality is very inconsistent. The discs are only $14 per 10 here in Oz but they probably work out more expensive than the Verbs when you realize how many are wasted.

Hopefully you have money for New DVD drives. Because you're killing your laser.

A new laser is cheap.

It probably is killing it, but 6 months on the hitachi and still going strong.

I dont frequent XBox forums much, I rip and burn movies, 1000's of them. I can say with confidence that Sony is a good media brand. Most people have problems with DL discs because of burning too fast. i've only used a few Sony DL discs, but all their single layers perform flawlwssly so I dont expect their quality to turn crappy just cause its dual layer. Besides, best quality DL is Verbatim, I cant go in a movie burning thread around here without many people advising to only use Verbatim DL discs. I stopped buying other brands and i've NEVER had a problem burning slow and using Verbatim.
The laws of burning discs are the same whether its DVD material or Xbox material you burn. Slow the speed down and ONLY use the good stuff. Even Lightning UK, the programmer who invented ImgBurn says to burn any DL disc at 2.4x!
Burn those Sony DL at 2.4x and I'll bet they work. Use this program to ID your discs, http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._identifier.cfm
And use that link KKM gave to see if they are any good.

I agree with you but with a quality burner, 4x works best with Verbatim DL media... Especially with a Hitachi 360 drive. I've done countless scans and have seen some 2.4x burns with more errors than my 4x burns. And I use a Sony DRU-810a burner.

Burned thousands of ps2 games and hundreds of 360 games with a 100% success rate.

I ONLY used Sony DVD+R discs for PS2 games and ONLY Verbatim DVD+R DL (Singapore) for 360 burns.

VERBATIM

again Verbatim is the ONLY DL u should use for 360 backups ...

just because u get a successful burn doesnt mean its a good disc ... if u use anything other than 1st class media in ur 360 ur gonna put strain on ur 360's laser/eye ...

jus put out the extra money and get the Verbatims ...

edit: and if ur town doesnt sell Verbatims then hop on the internet and order some ...

at least once a month microcenter has incredible deals (20 packs sometimes go for $27.99) if not on sale then jus hit newegg.com they have good deals also ...

also - ive been burning at 1x and always get good burns ...

Absolutely right Menace, 1. once you know what you are doing, 2. use a good burner and 3. use good media, burning at 4x isnt a problem. Saying use 2.4x is a fallback to help those who have troubles with burning. All these problems people have with DL discs shows me that one of those 3 simple guidelines arent being followed.

I gotta say Verbatim's seem to be the best media. I've backed up a dozen or so games since I flashed my first drive and I haven't had a single coaster.

The reason that people will say that Sony has bad media is due to the fact that you never know what you will get until you have bought them and run a media ID check. They outsource some of their meida production so you can get 1st class media, 2nd class media or even 3rd class media.

That is why i always stick to Taiyo Yuden DVD's and Verbatim DVD+R DL discs as my media of choice. Although regular Verbatim DVD+R will work for regular DVD's as well.

And that media ID list has been around for many years now.

Not to mention that DVD drives have been known to read certain media types better then another, as well as your burner and how well it handles the media when burning. So there are more factors then just the disc itself. I know certain PS2 machines that would read one media fine and not read others at all. Then i could take the one it would not read, back it up onto the brand i know it likes and they would work fine. And the disc that did not work on mine would work fine on another machine.

The made in India ones can be a bit worse than the made in Singapore one. As long has you have a quality burner it's not going to matter and the MII ones are still better than any other DL media on the market.
